Lately, I have spent a considerable amount of time writing about my concerns regarding the direction of the preprint ecosystem and the behaviour of some of the actors within it. Increasingly, I worry that preprinting is being pushed toward becoming little more than a replica of the existing scholarly publishing system. This is one of the most interesting developments as it appears that authors are now submitting preprints earlier in the process. A reminder that our data suggests that the best time to post is approx 1 month prior to journal submission (which ~30% now are).

So when do authors preprint? Many do long before they submit to a journal (to get feedback to improve the work?); many submit around the same time (just want the work out?). Only a minority are submitting once the paper is under review [evidence against claims by some detractors]. 3/n
