I get paid to shout at young people about movies, socialism, and why America sucks. LB: https://boxd.it/6R2FB

In Trump II, everybody will have their own personal moment of abject despondence. I’ve spent my life studying Hollywood, the political right, and their bond. There was always a logical conclusion baked into their relationship but I never thought it would be this base and disgusting. RIP WB & HBO.

I remember my father telling me how anti trust laws worked as a kid. Something like "Well son, we have laws where one electric company can't just buy all the OTHER electric companies. Then they could just charge whatever they want because there'd be no competition." We were a very optimistic people.

Very good second half about the lobotomizing side-effects of the conservative welfare state’s promise of "eternal college for aggrieved liberals." Will be interesting to see what will become of these losers once austerity hits their sector as America’s oligarchs have to re-orientate post Trump.

BLOOD WORK@bloodwork.show · last wk.

Gregk went on @trashfuture.bsky.social to listen politely as @raaleh.bsky.social recounted a series of non-actionable reported facts about the week’s big news story in the UK, and then discuss an article about the effort to Saigon Airlift Rod Dreher and his dapper friends out of Post-Orban Hungary.

The overall Reacher season was pretty good but more than anything, I will spend a while thinking about that final scene of Reacher sharing bread with the homeless woman. It was a beautiful encapsulating of both America‘s boundless cruelty and normal people‘s natural solidarity and urge to resist it.

"Islamic incusion" is "concerning to most Texans." I do love these guys for the wild shit they cook up and how they represent a funhouse mirror of reality. Really doing justice to Marx' camera obscura. But at some point you really have to take a step back: Islamic incursion in Texas. Mentally ill.

steven monacelli@stevanzetti.bsky.social · 4w ago

Earlier this year, Bo French did an interview with Chris Putnam, CEO of the Dallas Express and former Tarrant County GOP finance committee chair. Putnam asked French about "Islamic incursion." French said "it is an ideology that is hell bent on destroying America."

You know, a functioning political party might want to curtail the stuff that its political enemy is using for scams or the country‘s enemy is using for funding, or that is being used to defraud its own voters. An actual party could maybe whip its members; maybe even when it held the presidency?

Ben McKenzie@benmckenzie.bsky.social · 4w ago

@kirstengillibrand.bsky.social is urging fellow Ds to vote FOR the corrupt crypto CLARITY Act. I’m sure this has nothing to do with the fact that her 22 year old son received a $30 mil investment from a VC fund led by a crypto billionaire www.politico.com/live-updates...

If the Dems were to ever give (in to) something demanded by the base, this would open up Pandora‘s Box of material demands which is something the party will not and, crucially, can not deliver on under the structural conditions imposed on it by the 90s neoliberlization of its electorate.

Better Things Are Possible@internethippo.bsky.social · 4w ago

There’s a bizarre contrarianism in the Democratic Party, where, if an idea catches on with the base it’s treated as presumptively unreasonable forever. Not even an effort to *appear* to be supportive. Politicians used to pander!

"The only control or 'guardrails' that Al needs is a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT, and the U.S.A. has that, in spades!" This is one of those Trump lines that is both inanely stupid and something you can write several different 2-houre lectures around, depending on the subject of the course

G Elliott Morris@gelliottmorris.com · 4w ago

Trump is taking the 10% side of a 90-10 issue on AI/data centers. Talked about this on the podcast two weeks ago www.gelliottmorris.com/p/donald-tru...

Its ironic that the GOP reached the apex of its potential power with Bush Sr., his cadre of former CIA hitmen, and psychos like Rove or Bill Barr, but what killed him was the same impulse to un-fuck the post-Reagan economy. It‘s all happening again but infinitely dumber without Rove, Barr etc.

steven monacelli@stevanzetti.bsky.social · 4w ago

Karl Rove, who spent his entire adult life getting Republicans elected and has voted straight Republican for decades is now a fake Republican because he drew the line at "deport all Muslims and Indians"

A tweet from a senior editor at the right-wing Texas Scorecard, asking if anyone is surprised Karl Rove is voting for a Democrat (because he finds Bo French too extreme)

The AI summary of two decades of annoying, pandering, pathetic, juvenile, and evil bullshit. I can‘t imagine anybody wanting to watch this that hasn‘t already come around to him being a POS loser since he tried Sieg-Heiling his way to X‘s top 10 most re-X‘d Xs of the year. There‘s no catharsis here.

The 3-hour-and-45-minute “Musk” (plus a 10-minute intermission) hits theaters on Oct. 16, but it’s already causing a stir. The documentary paints Elon Musk as an emotionally unstable grifter with more power and influence than perhaps any other human. https://wapo.st/4ydlXzL

From time to time, I really do miss Twitter. The percentage of Nazis is now too high for my taste, but I do miss checking in on my closeted guys like SunEnjoyer or BronzeAgeVitalist. I miss Jash‘s idiotic book reports or Charles Haywood reinventing Strasserism and seeling Franco-themed bars of soap.

Saying this as a former union organizer: Like with the seizure of oil tankers at the start of the admin, it is clear and frankly impressive how well the think tank right has managed to do various power analyses to find lynchpins and bottlenecks they can exert pressure on to further their goals.

This colossal new tax will likely be charged to the university (!). Few universities — obviously — will pay. That will mean a collapse in access to OPT. That in turn will kneecap international enrollment at US universities, because the bridge OPT provides is a major reason students come—>

Translation: You‘re not getting public healthcare, housing, or just school lunches. But if you‘re lucky, you get to subsidize a machine for generating industrial amounds of child porn and memes about how half the population should be either killed, or placed in breeding pens. Onshoring!

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei: "My view here is it has always been very strange that this technology is being built by a private company ... I think the government and the public needs to have a stake. And that's why we've supported regulation."

Worth restating every now and then: Marxist theory allows for understanding individual incentives and structures of capitalism. But once approaching its logical endpoint its most powerful actors are able to retreat from the laws of capitalism. At that point, their individual neuroses start to matter

And surprise surprise. Elon Musk drops $100 million targeting Dems with anti-trans ads. Looking at the ads, it appears he is ramping up the ads targeting Dems who already caved. This includes Turek and Talarico. Subscribe to support our journalism.

This has been a major factor for the radicalization of our current cycle of nouveau capitalists. The comparisons to Gould, Morgan etc. are frequent but a point to stress is that Zuck etc. never faced the same pressures and thus never learned how to manage a fundamentally oppositional employee base.

you can just look at the donations -- this is not the case! anthropic employees' political donations are 99% to Democrats, and disproportionately to politicians who want to regulate their employer. anthropic employees' support for a Alaska politician promising a moratorium was a microscandal!

Early on Matt Christman said that the true horror of Trump was that all of US pop culture, commentary, even PoMo art in its entirety had predicted Trump but that nothing pointed beyond him. Now, the US has surpassed peak Verhoeven, which only confirms his observation. There is still nothing beyond.

Joe Kassabian@jkass99.bsky.social · last mo.

The new space force uniforms are directly inspired by the uniforms from the Starship Troopers film...which were inspired by the uniforms of the Nazis that Paul Verhoeven saw occupying the Netherlands during WWII

Fascinating to witness in real time Markest People understanding that 1) there is no such thing as The Market and 2) there is no such thing as the rational Homo Economicus. Trump deliberately pissing off the entire world is now 'trickling down‘ to the US essential credit rating.

All social media is based on funneling, channeling, and profiteering off of the massive social alienation produced by late capitalism, which in turn produces these kinds of companies and business models that only further said alienation. LB is part of this but also, basically, the only good service.

There is a very real connection between friends of mine in Europe not being able to get a job, and Americans being gradually driven insane by the contradictions of living in the World Capital of Freedom, but not having access to medical procedures basic to any civilized society.

The right-wing organizing around the Lindsay Clancy trial is growing and it’s frightening. A lot of people overlook these culture wars revolving around women’s issues, because, well, they’re women’s issues. But the right doesn’t. It’s how they regained such a massive cultural foothold.

Trump 1 was characterized by him, daily, saying the dumbest shit imaginable, but there being little to no consequences. Trump 2 is still him saying the dumbest shit imaginable, but now his entire cabinet does so too and occasionally there are horrendous consequences. The whiplash administration.

I‘m sorry you career got shot to shit Col. Josh Gaspard but why did you Parachute into Afghanistan? Why were you in Iraq? Why did you stick around in the US military even after learning what an illegal disaster this all was? Or why did you apparently never learn that fucking lesson. Fuck these peope

I genuinely do not see the downside to this. We are hurdling towards unimaginable catastrophe regardless of what Hegseth or even Trump do. These are all GWOT people, most of them have killed people, all of them violated at least intl. and prob US law by being part of this disaster.
