ZUN have done so much for feminism when he made both villains of SHoSS achieve their respective goals, develop a weird partnership in the process, and have some the most lesbian dialogue of any Touhou games
Misogyny is as usual the root cause; all Touhou fans ever do is try to make powerful, complex female characters into non-threathening stereotypes they can laugh at and sexually objectify. Female and LGBT fans are absolutely not exempt from doing it, and it applies to how they approach shipping too.
Semi-related to my previous thread bc all the reasons I listed are also why okiyuuma has no chance of getting popular or even acknowledged by more than like 3 people for what it truly is, despite being one of the most canon ships in the franchise.

For anyone who doesn't already know, touhou lore is super worth learning. Go read Yuyukos backstory or Mokous part in cage in lunatic runagate. Zun puts a lot of work into touhou's lore. There is a lot of complex stuff going on with basically every important character.
And don't get me started on the additional racism that comes from when people actually engage with the source material but only do it on the level of: "Oh ZUN just drunkenly makes shit up, touhou actually makes no sense, touhou lore is not worth learning bc it's jibberish"
I'm also thinking about how one of Land of Oracular Zeitgeist's artists was getting blasted on twitter a week or two ago because Reimu's alt palette in that game is black and the language the assholes harassing him were using was vile
Everyone is lambasting the bigots and shitheads of the Touhou fandom, eh? Excellent. Good, very good. I'll never forget getting randomly dogpiled by racists for black edits, esp since I wasn't really "in" the fandom at the time and on a side account with low visibility and followers.
There's more I wanted to do here but it wasn't coming together as I hoped, so I took a break. This was supposed to be quick portrait practice after all! Youmu Konpaku remains one of my fave characters in the Touhou project #youmukonpaku #魂魄妖夢 #touhouproject #東方Project
I will never forget that time *those* ppl dogpiled a Brazilian artist for giving Reimu very slight melanin to which, funnily enough, wasn't really much melanin at all, it was just the colors chosen for their artstyle and they drew Reimu like that before many times.
Shit was so bad for me cuz nearly every post I made, whether it was art or pointing out the issue, I had racists, fence-sitters and weirdos congregating like flies with unasked opinions and unfunny antiblack "memes". It was like my account was cursed, they somehow kept finding me :/
And if you think it stops at fandom illiteracy and that fandom jokes are just jokes... just look at how minorities are treated in here. None of my black touhou mutuals are into touhou anymore or barely post anymore bc of the rampant and unchecked racism of this fandom.
Yeah god I didn't even mention the amount of people that turn out to be creeps and groomers, bc that too is a huge problem.
2nd, the misogynistic assholes who dominate much of the online community are also running events and getting accused of SA.
not that the canon material is flawless and perfect but if you only ever interacted with the shallow and stereotype-ridden fanon material youd forget that this is the same franchise that had a book where aya gets called out by hecatia for trying to push a trump-style anti-immigration moral panic
i spent a good few years avoiding touhou and just flatout rejecting it altogether because i could only ever associate it with the same type of 4chan users who would go around twitter with k-on pfps saying the most heinous racist shit possible
if i had a nickel for the sheer amount of racism i experienced in just 2 years alone, never mind the entire time i've been a fan, i would never have to worry about any monetary related problems ever again

uninteresting at best and *slurs in my inbox* / "encouragement to become an ecchi artist as a minor at the time" at worst
i think the best tldr i got is when i got into touhou i expected a lot of people carrying the hashtag feminist energy touhou kinda has with all the girls being walking danger signs only to find out people do not actually gaf and most discussion i had with casual touhou fans being
people were willing to jump me for not really fucking with hong meiling conceptually and making a thread on disabeled touhou characters but god forbid u don't wanna appease to everyone and the disconnected humor of the fanbase at large
2 add i remember a good portion of how people reacted to me just "playing touys" was often just met with people being bullies/ bigots to the point i had a folder on my laptop dedicated to how many people called me slurs online for just drawing or talking about issues relevant to touhou project
My own thoughts about the Touhou fandom as a Black queer *Note: I will make a small(ish) mentions about other grievances from people who hate the old jokes in the fandom as well, but as for the first few things, just grievances as a Black American, as a queer, and as a disabled person
Touhou fans refusing to engage with official material and lore doesn't just begin and end at "oh but we're just playing toys", it actually feeds into and perpetuates the bigotry that this fandom was created in and it's one of the leading reasons why it's no less bigoted than it was 20 years ago.
This whole situation sums up the touhou fandom so well. Unlike OP I have a way less polite and calm essay I wrote about the fandom and since a measured tone of voice doesn't do anything to stop you from getting hate and your post deleted I'm seriously considering dropping it.
update: op's discussion thread was nuked by mods owing to the art sourcing rule. while art sourcing is extremely important, especially in a space so heavily predicated on users sharing the work of other people, the mod response here comes across horribly. sneering, almost. the mods are an issue.
orin design #touhou instead of only having her tail split in two, she went the extra mile and split the skin from her flesh down to the tail. also she makes jewelry out of human bones from bodies she scavenges
