Sonic Advance (GBA) It looks the part, but something is always just a touch off. You jump too slowly, or are too vulnerable when you do. Rings fly off a little too quick to re-grab so they're mostly a way to gain a 1-up. If it was the only 2D Sonic you'd accept it. But nothing ever gets beyond fine.

Wario Land 2 (GBC) "Hey! Shouldn't you be collecting coins to feed into the mini games? Every single level has a hidden treasure and map piece. Better get them all!" This whispered nagging design element overwhelmed all the fun of moving and exploring I might have otherwise had with the game.

AD Police (1990) They almost tell some pretty adult cyberpunk stories here, but because it is a 90's OVA everything ends up being "adult" in the most mundanely trashy way. Of course being a 90's OVA the production values are off the charts. It will keep me sated until Edgerunners Season 2 arrives.

Elden Ring Shadow of the Erd Tree (XSX) Vaccination weekend play. A lot to take in but in being denser than the main game, a much more enjoyable experience in terms of pure exploration. Way more riding Torrent to cover distance. Constant, "I bet I can get over there" and then figuring out how to.

Foundational texts. A fun quiz. It is funny, I have had students that are convinced I do not like Manga / Anime. My guess is because I am not even the least bit up to date on what is going on in that world that they cannot conceive of someone liking something but also not intensely following it.

I wish I had a more interesting answer than Mega Man 2. But so many early games are tricky or esoteric in a way that as a kid I might have gotten too frustrated to have fun. I was a child who had BIG emotions about not being good at things. Mega Man 2 had rules that made sense and I could master.

What's your "origin" video game? Most gamers have a lot of favorite games, sure, but there's always one that basically 𝘥𝘦𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴 you. I'm talking about the game that flipped that little switch in your brain and made into a life-long gamer. So, which game is 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙨?
