Today is the birthday of my best friend & his twin brother. 💔💛 I’d give anything to have them back. Full caption in the alt text. 🕊️ #CourtneyLeeDesigns #grief #artsky @rockstarsuperstarproject.org

“Today is your birthday 💛

Another year quickly going by without you. It’s so hard to find the words for this perpetual emptiness. You both should still be here. You still had such big dreams and unfinished work to do. Life (and death) is so unfair.

Kris, my best friend…oh, how I wish I could call you. 💔

Even from beyond, these brothers still have quite the story to tell, and a legacy to be shared with the world.

Happy birthday, Kancler twins. 💫✨💛”

“Happiness is our essence" - Kris Kancler 💛

Kris, you brought so much joy into my life. It’s still so difficult to not sit and wallow in my grief; sometimes, I still feel guilty for being happy because you aren’t here to share it with. My memories of you are some of my most cherished possessions that no one can take from me. That gives me comfort. ❤️‍🩹 It has been over two years already since you passed, and that void in space and time has allowed your mission to become my mission…however slow and quiet of a process it has been. Your positive, encouraging, loving essence lives on in me. I want to live a life that you can be proud of, and to know that your legacy continues to offer happiness to others. 💛

From my birthday last weekend: a personal journey of grief while walking through the House of Guitars. 💛 Read the alt text for more 💛 #CourtneyLeeDesigns #ROC #rochesterny #RSSS #grief #loss #artsky

A photo collage (2025) by Courtney Lee Designs. Full caption below:

“The best birthday gift I could have ever given to myself:

On Sunday, August 24th… I visited Rochester’s renowned The House of Guitars for the first time in over twenty years. It’s my first time ever walking through it in its entirety. As awesome of an experience as walking through that venue is all by itself…I went there with a mission. I set out to find the signatures of my best friend Kris and his twin brother Marc, which they inscribed back in 2011.

My birthday is forever marked now as the day before the anniversary of Kris’ death…and I continue to remember him, honor him, and speak of him every chance that I can. It was a calling to seek out his and Marc’s handwriting – their legacy of Rockstar Superstar Project – forever etched in the walls of the House of Guitars, amongst their many musical heroes and countless other legends of the music industry.

I was so overwhelmed with simultaneous grief and joy when I stumbled across their names amongst the HUNDREDS of others. I cried (as you can see from my photo)…and my heart still hurts so much… but it is also filled with so much love.

I miss you, Kris. You and Marc are still here. Thank you for helping me to continue keeping my own fire lit in your stead. ❤️‍🩹

"Rock Star" (2023) by Courtney Lee Designs. A digital portrait memorializing Rock Star (Marc Kancler). Rock Star worked with his twin brother, Super Star (Kris Kancler), and became the founders of Rockstar Superstar Project. Rock Star was a prolific guitarist. These twin brothers worked alongside many famous musicians, as well as experts in the industries of substance use disorder and mental health, to spread awareness in many creative ways about the dangers of drugs and alcohol. They both strongly advocated others to lead a life of sobriety, and what they coined as “dream-catching” - encouraging their youthful audiences to chase their dreams. Rock Star passed away in November 2017. Super Star and Courtney became close friends and worked together on various design projects, starting in 2018. Super Star expressed his desire to return to his work with Rockstar Superstar Project. Super Star could never fulfill this goal, as he also passed away in August 2023. Courtney Lee Designs continues to use her own platform, as well as this RSSSP Bluesky account, to share the stories of Rock Star, Super Star, and RSSSP. She continues to make art and pursue other professional endeavors that will help continue their legacy.

I miss my best friend Super Star so much. 💔❤️‍🩹🕊️ He is the whole reason that the shown 2020 portrait of Gene Simmons ever happened, due to his lifelong love of KISS. This new piece features Paul Stanley, in a similar style. #CourtneyLeeDesigns #RSSSP #artsky #musicsky @rockstarsuperstarproject.org

“I Love It Loud” (2020 vs. 2025) KISS fan art by Courtney Lee Designs. At the start of the COVID shutdown in March 2020, Courtney asked her online following to help her find inspiration for new art, through music. Her best friend Super Star was well-known for being one of the biggest fans of KISS, along with his twin brother Rock Star. So naturally, Super eagerly suggested their song, “I Love It Loud". The two-dimensional digital Gene Simmons portrait shown in the bottom left corner of this image was the result. He is front-facing, making his iconic facial expression with his tongue sticking out, dressed in full stage makeup and attire. It has a grungy, painterly texture, with a colorful background inspired by the illumination of stage lighting. For Courtney to have her best friend’s input and inspiration as the sole reason that that piece ever came to fruition, is enough for it to hold its own sentimental meaning to her, even almost five years later. She wanted to revisit that concept now in January 2025, out of curiosity for the new approaches she could take to the project, as well as out of missing Super so much everyday. This latest iteration features Paul Stanley in full makeup, in the same two-dimensional illustrative style with bold, thick black ink outlines. The color palette is a simple black, red, and white, with minimal use of cool gray tones.
