Delighted to receive the new biography of Anna Atkins by Corey Keller. It's a fascinating study of Anna’s life and work within the wider context of women’s 19th century lives. Highly recommended read and, of course, stunning illustrations.

Over on our blog, Digital Resources Manager Louisiane Ferlier takes a look at the history of women in the Royal Society library and finds they undoubtedly worked and studied there long before they became eligible for election to the Fellowship in 1945: royalsociety.org/blog/2025/04...

Women undoubtedly read and worked in the Royal Society library long before they became eligible for election to the Fellowship in 1945, as Louisiane Ferlier explains.

This week introduces one of the least visible of all early British women photographers but possibly one of the most significant. Mrs Atkinson was an itinerant photographer travelling with her 'Photographic Van' in her 1860 Richmond and Ripon Chronicle advertisement. 1/2

Kingston upon Hull was the location for a third early woman photographer, Mrs Hannah Hardey. Her primary occupation had been as portrait painter in oils, but in 1857 she branched out into photographic portraiture located at her husband’s studio on Jarratt Street. 1/2

A huge thank you to all presenters and attendees who celebrated #InternationalWomensDay by supporting our #Women of #photography conference-athon. It was an amazing opportunity connecting with researchers to highlight fantastic dedicated research in all corners of the world.
