Solid aluminum coin (with gold-colored surface) proving that one is a Member of the National Swimming Pool Institute. It measures 1.5 inches in diameter and displays an abstract sun in the sky above abstract pool waves. It is, perhaps, the oddest coin (or token) that I own. Apparently the National Swimming Pool Institute (NSPI) was founded in the US in 1956 to promote the pool industry. It became the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals (APSP) at some point, then merged with the National Swimming Pool Foundation to become the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance (PHTA) in 2019. Besides issuing rules and codes for pools and spas it also trains pool builders and workers, issues professional certificates, and works to advance the interests of the pool industry. Does the coin float? Alas, no - it quickly sinks to the bottom of any container of water that it has the misfortune of finding itself in. That's probably a metaphor for something but I'm too busy coughing up water out of my lungs after retrieving it from the bottom of my inflatable wading pool to figure out exactly what it is right now.

The simple and elegant back of the National Swimming Pool Institute's coin featuring a starburst with the words "Swimrite of California" emblazoned in the center. I've been told it's worth about three dollars. I look forward to dropping it in a church's collection plate someday so that some poor minister going through the day's take may enjoy pondering its meaning as much as I have.

Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) right control pad. It has two round light purple buttons and two dark purple buttons nestled inside a larger gray circle. The two light purple buttons are resting within a capsule-shaped base of light gray. The set of dark purple buttons are resting within a similar base of light gray. The buttons are labeled X, Y, A, and B. The larger circle they rest in measures 2 inches in diameter. The buttons themselves measure half an inch in diameter. Wikipedia tells me that SNES was released in North America on Aug 23, 1991 - almost 35 years ago! It is hard for me to believe that so much time has gone by since this unit first came into my life. Seems like it was only yesterday that I was spending hours and hours with this very control pad, ruining the muscles in my thumbs while losing game after game and cursing loudly. Have I ever been so addicted to something that left me feeling so bad so often? (I mean, besides voting? And love?) They stopped selling SNES back in 1999. The echoes of my cursing still echo down the years . . . . Oh, wait - no. Those are the echoes of my cursing about bad drivers and auto mechanics. Never mind!

Purple Prince zinnia. Grown from seeds planted back on April 11. Now about at its peak. The goldfinches like to peck at these zinnias - but not enough to do much harm. A few tiger swallowtails have visited as well - they've done even less harm. This zinnia got watered today. It seemed to like it!

California Giant orange zinnia. Grown from seeds planted back on April 11. I wasn't sure about mixing these with the Purple Prince zinnias but they've actually gotten along quite well. I really, REALLY over-seeded my new 4 foot by 8 foot raised garden bed and then didn't thin much but it all worked out. I now have a thick grove of zinnias at least as tall as I am. Maybe next spring I'll attempt to over-seed the entire world and see what happens.

Blue chicory bloom. From a seed that I planted last year. It did well in 2025 and managed to survive the winter. I like the way that these blooms open up in the morning and then close up by early afternoon. I hope to emulate that someday! If I do, don't confuse the two of us. This chicory plant is taller than I am - and probably smarter. On the other hand, I'm not the one that passively lets the midnight deer chew off parts of me.

Sunflower bloom. Grown from a seed harvested from last year's huge sunflower and planted on April 11. This guy isn't going to get as big as that 14 footer but I think it's still a good 9 feet tall. That's tall enough for it to see over the fence and into my neighbor's yard. Every morning I apologize to it for not having more interesting neighbors. All to no avail - it still refuses to talk to me.

A plastic container of 30 assorted needles with "30 ASSORTED NEEDLES" printed across the front so you don't forget. It's a mostly clear plastic container with a pink insert that keeps the needles properly segregated. There's a hole in the bottom edge of the container; the face of the container cleverly rotates so that the hole can be matched up with the needle repository you want to access. The edge is serrated to enhance your grip and make the necessary rotation as easy as possible (well, unless you have a servant to do this sort of thing for you). The whole thing measures 2.75 inches in diameter. FYI: I only wanted to buy one needle in order to fix the bottom hem on a pair of pants but apparently nobody sells one needle anymore (if they ever did). So I bought 30 and used one. It might well be the only needle I ever use. It's a good, strong needle - the biggest of the bunch. I have no idea what one might use a short, weak needle for, but I now have several in case I ever find out. If I'm ever invited to a wedding again I think this will be my gift. If the loving couple notices there are actually only 29 needles in the pack at any time prior to their first anniversary it's a sign that they probably should have married someone else - someone who kept them busy with something other than needle counting. (Get the point? Haha. Sorry - it's late. And I'm not just counting needles - I'm *writing* about it. I have no life. Please send money.)

Seven round Chips Ahoy Candy Blasts chocolate chip cookies can be seen lurking within the container along with a piece of white bread (put there for its softening moisture). Beyond that can be glimpsed the orange top. If I look long and hard at this photo as if it were a crystal ball, I can glimpse my future. It's a future of smiles and obesity, and of a permanent sugar-induced high purchased at the cost of personal bankruptcy. Can I change this future? Hmmmm - sounds like a good question to ponder over a glass of milk and a cookie!

The blue plastic cap to a 45 oz. bottle of Mr. Clean Antibacterial Summer Citrus liquid cleaner. About 2 inches in diameter. It's been so long since I've had the cap off and used the cleaner that I can no longer recall whether this cleaner works well or not. As caps go, though, this is about the prettiest blue one I have. I bet more people choose a cleaner on the basis of the cap than on the learned reviews published by Consumers Reports. Hmmmmm . . . . Maybe Democratic candidates for office ought to all start wearing pretty blue caps instead of releasing policy papers or engaging in debates? (Just a thought!)

Lawn sprinkler head. Black plastic with a variety of settings. I never can remember which setting gives me what spray pattern, so it's an endless game of set, go turn on wall faucet, look and see how far off I am from what I wanted, turn off wall faucet, reset, repeat. Once I get the pattern I want I can start on exact placement - which leads to a second game of set, go turn on wall faucet, look and see how far off I am from what I wanted, turn off wall faucet, reset, repeat. As soon as I have things the way I want them it usually starts raining. As is the case with all fine products like this, the manufacturer has made sure no trace of the company appears anywhere on this sprinkler. About 4.5 inches in diameter - which turns out to be more than enough to thoroughly soak myself if I'm not careful. On the plus side, this sprinkler has certainly made me appreciate the beauty and the merits of dried flowers.

Round blue sticker with a yellow star person in the center. Officially called "Smiley Stars" chart seals by the maker, Frank Schaffer Publications, Inc. in Torrance, CA. It's one of several colors and styles of stickers in the pack that bears the product code FS-1113. Copyrighted way back in 1992, which I'm guessing is about the time I acquired a pack of 500 (5 sheets of 100) for about $1.50. As usual, I'm not sure why I bothered. I like stickers, but I almost never use them. I'm always a bit intimidated by things that are easy to put on but often impossible to get off. Each sticker measures 7/16ths of an inch in diameter. I believe this is the only round thing I've posted with that exact diameter. Perhaps I'll put one on each eyelid tomorrow morning and see if anyone notices as I blink my way through another day.

The business end of a tube of DAP concrete siliconized filler & sealant. The photo shows a gray plastic cap with notches around its inner rim and a pointy application nozzle in the center. About 2 inches in diameter. The pointy center application nozzle rises about 2.75 inches above the notches (which might explain why it's a tad out of focus). The tube allegedly contains 10.1 oz. of water-proof and flexible ooze that I'm told will fill the cracks in my patio cement. Will it really? I'm skeptical. I've never tried to fill my concrete cracks before and suspect that the learning curve is going to be a bit steeper than I'll be able to handle. Perhaps I should try to fill someone else's cracks first so If I mess it up I won't have to live with the results. (NOTE TO SELF: The tube fits *into* a caulk gun rather than vice versa. Try marking this down this time BEFORE you attempt to use it lest you suffer a repeat of the Great Bathtub Caulking Disaster of 2022!)

LED flashlight with a protective black rubber outer casing, a silvery reflector, and an oddly square light source at the center. About 2.25 inches in diameter. Made by Rayovac. Powered by 2 "D" batteries. NOT to be confused with the Dorcy LED flashlight that I posted back on July 17. Truth be told, I like the Dorcy better because this one seems heavy and clunky in comparison. Yes, it gives a more evenly illuminated circle of light than the Dorcy, but there's an annoying bluish extra-bright square spot right in the center that's both blinding and distracting. If I were making a biopic about this flashlight, I think I'd cast Martin Short in the lead role. The Dorcy, of course, demands Meryl Streep.

The back side of the front of the flashlight in the previous photo after it has been unscrewed from the base and properly positioned for photographing. Honestly, this has to be one of the most boring back sides of the front of a flashlight that I've ever seen. Instead of the futuristic circuit board-like charm of the Dorcy we have a boring center encircled by a boring middle and edged by a boring black rubber casing. (I think I accidentally nodded off three times while typing that last sentence.) To be fair, a caveman would no doubt find it magical and endlessly fascinating. That's why I plan on finding the address of a caveman first thing in the morning and sending it to him.

Emma Goldman pin-back button. Gold background with green writing and a red sketch of Emma. The green writing spells out her name at the bottom and this quote in an arc around the top half: "The Most Violent Element In Society Is Ignorance". Print on the unseen edge reveals that this button was made by Donnelly/Colt Buttons Box188 Hampton CT 06247. I don't recall when I acquired it or why. I'm told that it probably dates back to the 1970s or 1980s. I *know* that it measures 1.25 inches in diameter. And that one just like it recently sold on eBay for $9.95. A new variation (red background, white writing, and black and white sketch) can be purchased at the Donnelly/Colt website for just 50 cents. Perhaps paying too much on eBay for an item is one more unfortunate consequence of ignorance. Are there others? I wish I knew!

Top view of a golf tee. It's a rich, nicely finished piece of wood, 3 inches high and 0.75 of an inch in diameter at the top. The name of a local golf course appears on the side in green script. I thought it was an oversized piece, made especially to serve as the companion to the silver key ring it's attached to, but no - it turns out that golf tees come in a variety of sizes ranging from 1.5 inches to 4 inches in height. I did not know this before doing a bit of research today. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go do a bit more research in a possibly fruitless attempt to discover why anyone would take the time to play golf when there are so many books to read. (And cat videos! Why would anyone play golf when they could be watching CAT VIDEOS???)

Ceramic soup bowl with a broad blue and white decorative rim and a Currier & Ives scene in the center. It is one of the few household items from my childhood that I still have. We used it very infrequently when I was growing up, and then only for homemade chili (which I didn't much like). It's probably a good thing that I didn't fill it every day with a breakfast cereal I loved as I'm told the glaze probably contains lead. About 8.5 inches in diameter. Made by the Royal China Company in Sebring, Ohio between 1949 and 1986 (when the company closed). My family probably got it as a low-cost or free premium at the old A&P grocery chain. I always thought it was a rather unique piece, but no - there were 316 for sale on eBay last time I checked, some going for as little as five dollars. If we ever owned anything that actually had some lasting value, I'm afraid it's now rotting away in some faraway landfill. (Perhaps I'll grab a shovel someday and go see if I'm right.)

Bottom view of the bowl. "CURRIER & IVES" appears in fancy print. Italicized print beneath that tells us that this particular scene is known as "Early Winter." (I suppose all-white bowls were called "The Peak of Winter".) We also learn that this is an "UNDERGLAZE PRINT BY ROYAL" and that it was "MADE IN U.S.A." Not a word about the lead contained in the glaze. For that you had to wait a few decades for the Internet to come along like a long-delayed bus. Perhaps generations of Americans unknowingly ended up with severe brain damage as a result of these bowls? That certainly would explain an awful lot . . . .

The face of a quartz wristwatch made by Marie Lourdes back in the 1980s or 1990s. It shows a classroom scene, with brown desktop, blue schoolbook, a red apple, and part of a blackboard or slate. The clock portion takes up less than half the space it could and has stylish black numerals and gold hands. It appears to be signed "Sue" but it's hard to tell if that's the name of the artist responsible or is a mere affectation. The whole is topped by a glass dome and ringed by a golden edge. Marie Lourdes is out of business now, but back in the day the company was known for its artsy designs. Many examples can be found on eBay ranging in price from 8 dollars to more than 125 dollars. As is so often the case, I can't recall where or when I acquired the one now in my possession. Regardless, I like it. In fact, I like almost all watches and clocks. As with maps and signs and Authoritative Tour Guides, watches and clocks create the illusion that we know where we are. It's an important illusion to cling to if one wants to avoid madness. *Making a note to buy a few more maps and clocks first thing in the morning*

Top view of a small, mostly yellow plastic plunger (also known as a plumber's helper or a drain declogger). About 4.5 inches in diameter and 7 inches high. The black plastic (rubber?) ring provides a good seal. I've used it several times and it's always done a good job. Someday I hope to use it on my plumbing.

Bottom view of my mostly yellow plastic plunger. This photo makes it look far more interesting than it actually is. Sure, it's a beautiful shade of yellow, and the black rim really sets it off, but the motives of the characters are hard to discern and the plot is virtually non-existent. If the author's second plunger is no better than this I would strongly advise him or her to go back and study Shakespeare's 39 plungers to see how a real genius handles these things.

A floppy disk with its cover removed. Just a bit under 3.5" in diameter. I've had this particular disk since 1997 but never thought about disassembling it until today when I realized I'd probably find something deliciously round inside - and I did! Not sure why I still had something labeled "Windows Start-up Disk" from almost 30 years ago - but then I'm not sure of much of anything anymore. The case tells me it was made by Fuji and was IBM formatted. "HD" too - for High Density. Which means it could hold as much as 1.44 megabytes of data. HA! (I.e., HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!) Of course I have lots of these relics - and no way to access them. I really should pronounce them dead and bury them or something, but . . . part of me thinks that somehow, someday they might prove to be valuable again. That's why I still have a few deely bobbers, too. I can't find them, but I know they must be here somewhere. RANDOM FUN FACT: The floppy disk you see contains cobalt-doped iron oxide. That's the very best kind of iron oxide, you know. Accept no substitutions!

Milk chocolate disk wrapped in gold foil so that it appears to be a gold coin. "DAVID GARRICK" is embossed at the top of the foil. A vague image of David appears in the center. Since only the smartest people visit this site you might already know that he lived from 1716 until 1779 and was a very influential English actor and theater manager who ended up being buried in Westminster Abbey (after his death). I was given this "coin" by a friend who acquired it during a trip to London. Or maybe Broadway. It was a long time ago. I have somehow managed to resist tearing open the foil and eating the chocolate for some 25 years. Will tonight be the night I finally succumb to temptation??

A green burr. I was working in the far back end of my yard today when this little guy latched onto my shirt and refused to let go. He was the clingiest botanical thing that I think I've ever encountered. What could I do but bring him into the house with me and take his photo once I noticed his round nature? About 1 inch in diameter. Some of his family members that I left behind had purple blossoms emerging from their... um, "insides" I guess is the term I'm looking for. I've now dropped him in a glass of water in hopes that he'll eventually do the same. We'll see!

Classic beige/white rubber sink drain stopper/plug. Measures about 2.5 inches in diameter. Fits drains up to 1 and 3/8ths in diameter. I had great hopes for this plug when I first bought it last year for my wash tub drain but I can't recall having used it even once. I think it was the round silver pull loop that sealed the deal. One just never knows when the irresistible urge to yank on one of those loops may hit so the wise will always have one on hand and at the ready. You just might be rewarded with a tornado-like spiral of water rushing down the drain like a spiral of intergalactic dust rushing into a black hole!

Yellow plastic thimble. About three-quarters of an inch in diameter - which is a bit too small to protect my fingers from sharp needles and pins. Fortunately it's just about the right size to stick in my ear when I want to protect my mind from sharp comments. (Do they make whole brain thimbles? There are days when I could really use one of those!) NOTE: Wikipedia tells me that the word "thimble" can be traced back to the Old English words "pymel" and "puma" - "puma" being the ancestor of "thumb". How odd to discover that my thumb has a different ancestor than I do!

LED flashlight with four round LED bulbs arranged in a square within a circle. A black rubber rim offers protection against bumps and drops. I'm told it floats but I haven't tested that. About 2.25 inches in diameter. Made by Dorcy. Cost: About $10. Powered by three AAA batteries. VERY bright. Do I love it? Well, not enough to marry it, but we've been living together for a year or more now without any major arguments, so who knows what the future may hold.

There's the black rubber rim again, then a space, then a brass-colored metal strip/edge, and then a green circuit board-like center with screw heads and solder and a few charming plus signs in white. MUCH more interesting than the old-style flashlights that just had the dull backside of a silver reflector and the back nub of the dim, centrally located bulb. How did I survive such technologically inferior times??

The orange plastic cap off of a clear plastic bottle of Tropicana orange juice. I find the juice to be about as good (or bad) as Minute Maid or Simply Orange. The Minute Maid doesn't need to be refrigerated until after it's open, so I guess that gives it the edge. Except it has a boring black cap. I was in the mood for something orange today and this was handy. By my count, it's the 14th orange thing I've posted a photo of here since I started posting about 18 months ago. That works out to less than one orange thing a month. This cap is perhaps the most mundane of them all. In an attempt to make it more of a stand-out thing perhaps I'll someday cover an entire wall of my kitchen with several thousand of them. Let's see, the cap is 1.5 inches in diameter, so 100 in a line would cover 150 inches or 12.5 feet. Hmmmm, looks like I might need 100 x 72 to cover a whole wall, or 7200. If I drink one 11 oz. bottle a day and save the cap I'll have just about all I need in just under 20 years. Hmmm, maybe I'll try to speed things up by moving to a place with smaller walls....

Front side of a coin or token commemorating the Bellevue, Ohio Cherry Festival that was established in 1974. There's a cluster of cherries in the center surrounded by an outline of the state of Ohio with a star indicating the location of Bellevue. The coin/token is made of aluminum and measures 1.5 inches in diameter. It has no known practical use but serves as a souvenir or a memento of the festival. Souvenirs and mementos, of course, remind us of where we've been and what we've seen and done. Or perhaps they're just one more way that fools and their money are separated. Experts disagree.

A silhouette of the Cherry Festival Queen appears in the center between two clusters of cherries and right below the words "CHERRY FESTIVAL QUEEN". At the bottom is the year this particular coin/token was issued - 1977. That was a few years before I actually attended the festival. Not having had the presence of mind to buy a coin/token while I was there, I bought this older one about 15 years ago for 99 cents. It serves as a memento not of the festival so much as of the Bordette Hotel. That hotel was a grand old place in Bellevue that reeked of history and had a wonderful multi-colored domed skylight in the center. It was vacant when I visited but open for tours during the festival. A short time later it was gone - torn down and replaced by a parking lot. Or maybe a Dairy Queen. Too bad. If they ever recover its remains from the landfill and reassemble it, I might be tempted to go back.

A faux antique wall clock. There's a patchwork bird just below the center point. Blue/green background. Black Roman numbers. A rather wide rusty rim that protrudes out past the plane of the bird. "QUARTZ" appears rather boldly at the bottom of the bird - which does a nice job of destroying the illusion that this clock is many decades old. Powered by a standard AA battery that fits in a mechanism identical to those in most modern wall clocks. About 12.5 inches in diameter. As is so often the case, I have no idea where or when I got this timepiece. At some point it just seems to have attached itself to my life like a piece of wayward lint and now here we are, old friends without much to say to each other. Maybe someday I'll drop an egg on the floor directly under the bird and proclaim it a miracle just to see if anyone is gullible enough to believe me.

The other end of my curtain rod's finial. This is the end that actually screws into the rod. That silver thing in the center is the actual screw. (Or maybe I should say bolt since it doesn't have a sharp pointy tippy tip.) Overall diameter: 2.25 inches. That's 2.25 inches that I feel like I've rather neglected since I first purchased it some 25 years ago. In all those years I bet I haven't spent an hour in total looking at this finial and enjoying it. I've almost certainly spent more time with it today than I have spent with it during whole years in the past. I'm not proud about that. In fact, I feel rather ashamed. Lots of people in this world don't have a single curtain rod finial to love and appreciate, and here I am neglecting mine and taking it for granted. And NOW I see there's another finial at the other end of the rod that I've given even LESS time to! *Vowing to limit myself to just three candy bars a day until I begin to mend my evil ways*

The caffeinated version is the gift I give myself every afternoon. For some reason it works out better this way for me than the reverse does. For example, let's say you have a tiny faux bottle of Maalox and you want to display it on the tiny faux sink in the tiny faux bathroom of a dollhouse without having to worry about it falling off when a big truck in the real world rumbles by. You'd take a dab of UNDERSTICKUM (a clingy type of translucent white/yellow wax) and put it under the bottle to make it stick to the sink. It also works on tiny faux boxes of Tums or Pepto-Bismol tablets (my dolls used to have a lot of digestive issues) or any other tiny item. This particular container weighs 1.4 ounces, measures 1.5 inches in diameter, and holds about 99.8% of the UNDERSTICKUM I acquired several decades ago for $1.30. The bottom of the container gives me the patent number 2852054 but it turns out that's for the container itself and NOT what it contains. Apparently that patent was granted back in 1956 - which naturally raises the question, "What did cave people keep their UNDERSTICKUM in?" I'll be sure to let you know if I find out.

I believe the button was meant to promote some long-ago small town school levy. If memory serves correctly, that town's high school colors were yellow and green. Online sources tell me that those aren't very popular school colors - but I like them. (I think my own school's colors were black and blacker. We were known as the Fightin' Existentialists. Of course we were too busy hotly debating the nature of being to ever actually show up for any of our games.) FUN FACT: Wikipedia tells me that the UK's Cambridge University was the first school to embrace a school color (blue) in 1836. Westminster School embraced pink a year later. Has any US school ever embraced pink? *Making a note to attend the next local school board meeting to suggest pink and lavender football uniforms for the upcoming fall season* BTW - this pin-back is 2.25 inches in diameter. If that's what you guessed you have my permission to feel VERY good about yourself.
