I'm watching @netflix.com Famous Last Words with Gloria Steinem now. I am so grateful for her life's work, and immensely proud to have published in @msmagazine.com. I learned today that Gloria's mother was also one who experienced menopausal sleeping pill addiction. msmagazine.com/2025/08/01/w...

Sleep Is a Feminist Issue: Why Women’s Rest Is Political

the medical system has long dismissed women’s sleep struggles—especially during menopause—putting their health and lives at risk.

Where does your "Mind after Midnight" wander? Mine frets about the excessive space junk induced Kessler Effect. I had the chance to ask the Papal astronomer (Br. Guy Consolmagno, PhD) if it was a rational worry. He replied it was an inevitability. That didn't help. www.nytimes.com/2026/07/31/w...

A Ton of Space Junk Tumbles Unpredictably to Earth Every Week

Flaming chunks of metal crash into homes, farms and parking lots. Who’s to blame? And who pays for the damage?

I talked to a neighbor whose Somali US citizen grandmother was wrongly detained by ICE and sent to a detention center in Louisiana. Access to beds was in eight hour shifts in a room like this, and they drugged the women to get them to sleep during the day.

86 people in a single ICE holding room, "all jostling for space in a closet of humanity that smelled of sweat, urine and feces." What would we call it anywhere else? www.washingtonpost.com/immigration/...

I was thankful for a church service this weekend on grieving political violence. Here in St. Paul, it’s the 10th anniversary of the murder of Philando Castile, a beloved school team member and part of our neighborhood. So much grief, so little accountability.

It’s been six months since the killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti. Here is how the federal government has stonewalled investigations, and how Minnesota law enforcement is attempting to push for accountability anyway

I used Fitbit for > 10 years to track sleep and CV activity. Im so disappointed with the Google Health takeover a few weeks ago. The data reliability is poor & UX stinks. As a sleep researcher, I know I don’t need a wearable to tell me how well I slept. Ps: I slept a fine 6.5 hr last night.

I'm heading to Baltimore for #SLEEP2026! I'm so excited for my students' presentations and to learn from colleagues. Our lab's presentations are on: 1) ICE Stress, Insomnia & Nightmares College Students: 2) Sleep Locus of Control, Cannabis & Alcohol 3) Idiopathic Hypersomnia Misdiagnosis

🧵I was educated in Knox County, TN public schools. Even though Pulitzer-winner Alex Haley was literally the next county over, and I was in high school the year he passed, his name was never mentioned in school. Nor was hometown hero & poet Nikki Giovanni name. www.wbir.com/article/news...

Knox County Schools adds Pulitzer Prize-winning 'Roots' to list of banned books

Knox County Schools recently took Alex Haley's influential novel, "Roots," off library shelves under the Age-Appropriate Materials Act.

This Mother’s Day, I’m grieving all the senseless loss in our community. * the Hortman’s assassinated on Father’s Day; * mass shooting at Annunciation; * Good & Pretti murdered by ICE *Thousands of neighbors deported, with grieving students left behind * 70 children in held in detention

Five turtles sunning themselves on a rock in a greenish pond.

Just a reminder from my N of 20 health psychology class who completed the POMS (profile of mood states) before and after a 45 minute walk along the Mississippi River: taking a walk outside is good for the mood, with the effect sizes on par with a 12 week training in meditation or yoga.

Blue chart showing decreases intention, depression, anger, fatigue, and confusion, and large increases in vigor and friendliness after a 45 minute walk.

THIS! Stress testing --> *canceling childhood cancer research *ending USAID *crippling forest service *kneecapping mRNA vaccines *dictating medical school curriculums *eliminating social groups from military service *disenfranchising women and on and on

It’s hard not to see Vance’s criticism of the Pope’s theological bona fides as just silly hubris. But I also see it as a stress test of sorts — can they manipulate sentiment against a pontiff. Not for Trump’s interests. More likely for Thiel’s.

Hi sleep folks— it’s starting to be the season of school sponsored all night grad parties with the extremely sleep deprived teens driving themselves and others home in early morning. Does anyone have policy briefs about this? www.kitsapsun.com/story/news/l...

After drowsy driving tragedy a year ago, all-night Bainbridge grad tradition will go on

Last year, a Bainbridge grad reportedly fell asleep while driving after the event and hit two joggers.
