On the afternoon of August 5th 1909, the site of J & JE Philips Brewery caught fire - the largest fire ever to occur in Royston. Despite the efforts of the fire brigade, a large part of the building and brewery bell, used to ring in the beginning of the working day, were destroyed.

Last term, the Year 2 pupils at Icknield Walk First School learnt about Royston's physical and human geography as well as its history. As part of their topic they created their own information booklets about Royston. You can enjoy their work at the Museum this summer.

Meet Roy! 👋 Roy was built by our brilliant Year 10 work experience students. They didn't just bring Roy to life. They made it a sensory experience and even decided his height based on a 8yr old being able to reach the top of the sensory squares. Their innovation and creativity was just amazing!

Is it getting too much? Is touching grass not enough? Go further... Touch the oak posts. Touch the pine floorboards. Touch the plastered walls. Don't touch the staff though, not without consent.

At the start of the year, we discovered a void under the courtyard and had to pause the final stages of our air source heat pump project to investigate. It turned out to be a well rather than a second Royston Cave - good thing we didn't send a small child down, like they did in 1742!

This painting of pink Sweet Williams was painted on this day 112 years ago, on July 27th 1914, by Cecil Harold King when he was 14 years old. Cecil was born in Royston in 1900 and his scrapbook is filled with a curious mix of paintings of flowers and household furniture.

Earlier this summer, we borrowed a book scanner from The Collections Trust, as part of a pilot project for their ‘Banish the backlog’ programme. Over the course of 3 months we digitised our accession registers, as well as around 700 other items from our collections. Find out more: buff.ly/OKvOIog

Yesterday, our Wednesday volunteers were hard at work installing our new temporary exhibition, Play in the Past. Toys have filled our world with play and wonder throughout history. Discover familiar favourites alongside a few surprises, and explore how children played in the past.

It's the third Sunday of July, which can only mean one thing... it's National Ice Cream Day! 🍦😋 To mark this important day, can you help identify this ice cream seller? We think he may be Mr Sharp who was famous for his ice creams, which he made in his kitchen and sold on the Heath.

🎶 School’s out for summer! 🎶 In 1889, the pupils at the National School were given an extra 2 weeks on top of their normal 5 week holiday, so improvements could be made to the school. However, the work still wasn’t finished when they returned so they moved into the Mechanics Institute for a week.

This week, we've welcomed 6 students from King James Academy Royston and Melbourn Village College on work experience. Rhian led them through the different stages of planning a project before they set to work photographing our shop stock and creating a model of Roy, our summer holiday mascot.

This month our Spark! theme was STENCILS. Our young creatives made their own artwork inspired by Sister Mary Corita Kent! There's no Spark! during August, so the next session is September. Spark! is open to young people aged 8 to 13 and free to attend.
