The term metaverse has attracted particular attention with the rebranding of Facebook in 2020, before the social media network launched a transformative programme in 2021 to offer a metaverse-based work platform involving social, learning, collaboration, and gaming experiences.1 However, the term has been used at least since the 1990s.2 Initially employed in literature, it became subsequently applied in other contexts, such as education, to refer to how learners use technology to socialise and engage with each other.3 Over the years, however, the concepts of technology and particularly the metaverse have continued to evolve dramatically. Plagiarism is intentionally or knowingly reusing words, works, or ideas from another source without proper, clear, and unambiguous acknowledgment. Although definitions of plagiarism vary across institutions, it is generally agreed that three criteria must be met for plagiarism to occur: the reuse of another original work, the absence of acknowledgment, and the author's intention to deceive. Given its nature, definition, and practice, plagiarism is inextricably linked to language, law, and technology.

Disinformation has been commonly approached as fake news, i.e., news that does not comply with the principles of factuality, objectivity, and neutrality. However, not all pieces of disinformation are damaging (e.g., satire) or rely on lack of factuality. Rather, it is the combination of lack of factuality and intention to deceive that embodies the most serious form of disinformation. By taking advantage of echo chambers and filter bubbles, disinformers use distorted facts to disseminate alternative forms of disinformation and manipulate readers’ views.
