Here’s one that I’m sure will make a few dozen of you wince: “Oh…well even if that’s false, [person] is just kinda weird in general so I don’t like them. There’s plenty of other reasons not to.” And off to the next topic of discussion. Whatever it takes to prove to their circle that they are safe.
It is so, so, so incredibly easy to just say whatever one wants and cast it into the void of the worldwide internet, then walk away from the resulting carnage with absolutely no responsibility or attachment. The same people ready to ruin lives care nothing to try and make amends when they’re wrong.
The part that frustrates me the most is that - very often - when a major accusation is ultimately proven to be exaggerated/outright false, the people who started it simply go, “Oops! My bad” And that’s if they say ANYTHING. There is no proper closure or repair, and those who gossiped just move on.

Not everyone sees the ways we hold ourselves and others accountable offline, and how we’ve changed through the years. Be uncomfortable - but remember that’s still a person.
