In 2024, a redditor made a post titled "My bf asked for the banana & now I've got the ick." To some, it sounded like a joke or a minor relationship hiccup. Others saw it for what it was. Two years later, she returned and shared how serious it actually was. safeescape.org/it-wasnt-abo...

It wasn't about the banana - Operation Safe Escape

The question is not whether survivors are strong enough. They already are. The question is whether communities, systems, workplaces, and support networks are willing to become safe enough.

You are not weak because someone hurt you. You are not foolish because you hoped things would get better. You are not broken because survival changed you. You are still here. That matters.

Survivors are not defined by what someone did to them. They are parents, students, workers, friends, leaders, advocates, artists, caregivers, and community members. Recovery is about giving people room to live again. See the survivor.

On this day in 1969, humanity reached new heights when we walked on the moon. Engineers, astronauts, and countless others overcame challenges and adversity to accomplish what we once thought was impossible. It's amazing what we can accomplish when we work together. This post isn't about the moon.

“Why didn’t they just leave?” is the wrong question. A better question is: What barriers did they face, and how can we help remove them? Housing, money, transportation, custody, immigration status, disability, pets, threats, and fear are real barriers. Survivors need options, not judgment.

Leaving is not a single moment. It is often a process of planning, protecting, hiding, documenting, surviving, and trying again when the first plan becomes unsafe. When someone stays, it does not mean they are choosing abuse. It may mean they are choosing the safest option available today.

Abuse doesn't always "look like" violence. Sometimes it looks like isolation, surveillance, financial control, threats, humiliation, or making someone feel like they have no safe way out. Listen to your friends and loved ones, they may be saying more than what they're saying.
