Here is a new thing I am doing, 'The Lonesome Dove Cinema Club', screening the finest western films from around the world. First up is the 1950 James Stewart classic, 'Winchester '73'. Screening at the Beanbag Cinema on 22nd January at 7pm. All welcome, guns to be left with the door staff.

I found the diary of a 1939 Belfast cinema-goer and wrote a piece on what I found for @filmhubni.bsky.social 👉 filmhubni.org/blog/the-193... They made 183 trips to to see 325 films at 25 cinemas! But sadly the diarist's identity remains a mystery. Please help us identify them if you can.

#Belfast ! Look out for some great cinema back on the big screen @queensfilmtheatre.bsky.social kicking off Fri 12 Sept with Julien Temple‘s exuberant musical adaptation Absolute Beginners (1986) starring a who's who cast of music luminaries from Bowie and Ray Davies to Sade and Slim Galliard…

My article on the history of home video in Northern Ireland in today's @belfasttelegraph.co.uk. 'Say Yes to VHS', the new series of the Wonder Cinema podcast with @bhmbelfast.bsky.social launches tomorrow.

Happy World Book Day!

Old man opinion, but as an Englishman living in Belfast, a good cask bitter is the thing I miss the most. Feels like NI went straight from Guinness and cheap lager to gimmicky IPAs.

My local beer emporium is still under the cosh of hazy 8% IPAs, lemon sherbet sours, double-hopped pales and 11% breakfast stouts. I long for a new breed of ale hipster who’s into a 3% mild, a 4.4% stout, a 4% best bitter, and a 3.4% light ale and the rest.

I may reside in Belfast, but I know that the Prince Charles Cinema is a place of national importance. A shining beacon of all that's best in the crazy world of film culture. Sign this petition to support their fight with a rapacious landlord: princecharlescinema.com/savethepcc/ Long Live Cinema.

#SaveThePCC Some of you may have read about the situation regarding our new landlord wishing to add a new redevelopment break clause, with only 6 months notice to our lease. For now, we're simply asking you all to share & sign the petition below; you.38degrees.org.uk/p/princechar...
