After five weeks of work, the 2026 Summer Institute in Papyrology has concluded. Feeling very grateful to the hardworking students, instructors, and especially our funders, especially the American Society of Papyrologists and @sshrc-crsh.canada.ca.

12 participants seated around a large rectangle of tables with laptops open, with a large screen projecting an image of an inscribed ostracon on the far wall.

Just over 24 hrs until the Summer Institute in Papyrology begins in @umanitoba.bsky.social’s Dafoe Library. The participants and 3+ dozen @umichlibrary.bsky.social papyri have arrived in Winnipeg for 5 weeks of research sponsored by the American Society of Papyrologists and @sshrc-crsh.canada.ca.

Photo of Mike Sampson’s office door in 366 University College, affixed with department name, name bar (including in Linear B), construction-paper artwork of à penguin with ‘Sasha’ label, a “Support U(niversity of) M(anitoba) F(acuity) A(ssociation)” sticker, and a large, imposing DANGER: ASBESTOS sign in both English and French.

The papyri have arrived! Just over one month until the American Society of Papyrologists’ Summer Institute in Papyrology begins in the Dafoe Library @umanitoba.bsky.social

11 foam-wrapped archival boxes containing glazed papyrus fragments on a pair of library carts.

I’m late to the party on the latest Odyssey trailer but appreciated the split-second glimpses of Argos in both puppy and geriatric phases of life — if Nolan achieves half the emotion of that moment I’ll be happy
