1/3 dog, 1/3 arts+tech, 1/3 something something. You may have seen my reporting at: NYT, Polygon, Digital Foundry, The Stranger, Game Developer, Games Radar, Ars, American Airlines, The Atlantic, Wired, Dallas Morning News. He/him, from Seattle. Zero AI.

Nine years ago, Nintendo dusted off and launched the previously unreleased game Star Fox 2. Today, we get *two* unreleased gems (and both are fun!). Maybe in nine more years, Nintendo will give us another rare one. Mother 3? The Frog For Whom the Bell Tolls? CABBAGE?! See you in 2035, dreamers!

These previously unreleased Virtual Boy games are now available to play on Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics for #NintendoSwitchOnline + Expansion Pack members: ☑️ ZERO RACERS ☑️ D-HOPPER

hazier than I'd like, but still a beautiful day to drop your WA State ballot ahead of tomorrow's deadline! in the Seattle area, vote Yes to save our libraries! I heartily suggest @theurbanist.org's picks after careful reading, if you need a cheat sheet.

today's Lake City Street Fair in N Seattle is really fun in a low-expectations, local-hangout way. quality food vendors, solid craft booths, silly shit for kids, hokey bands, annnnnnnd signed Jimothy prints free with Henry art purchases! at 125th and 30th Ave NE til at least 7:30pm

slowly making my way through @planetmoney.bsky.social's recent book, and while I've quite enjoyed it, its excuses for generative AI turn my stomach. the core historical argument: automation adds jobs, and workers have long needed to adapt mid-career as tech changes. buuut apples != oranges 1/4

lol I called out the seemingly generative author of the top-rated post at r/seattle, and hours later, they deleted their entire 11-month-old account of craftily written—but ultimately porous—AI slop pretending to be a 26yo developer from Boston this was not good use of my time today, admittedly

Is this a bogus or AI-generated thread? This user has only a few months of activity, along with a potential account-origin post 11 months ago, and doesn't appear in any way to be a legitimate Seattlite. Search for

site:reddit.com "fernfernferny"
...and you'll find, among other things, a dating question from only two months ago that suggests this post's line about a "boyfriend" is suspect, along with a post from one month ago suggesting some kind of specific bus line tweak in Boston.

https://old.reddit.com/r/newhampshire/comments/1ucox17/business_idea_transit_along_i95_corridor/

Then we go to a pair of posts about job hunting that appear to contradict each other, one about listing specific experience and another about how the experience they are asked about in job interviews is "too broad." In the former, the text includes an "en dash" in the phrase "AI-related," and as someone who regularly picks between hyphens, em dashes, and en dashes in my line of work, I can tell you that en dashes are VERY difficult to accidentally type.

https://old.reddit.com/r/EngineeringResumes/comments/1t11ai5/3_yoe_fullstack_and_systems_engineer_resume/

I'm exhausted with how quickly these threads light up without anybody doing a due diligence check on whether it's AI slop. r/seattle is INUNDATED with AI slop. I'm not sure what the structural solution might be, but on a user level, I implore the rest of you (at least, the humans) to please pause and ask yourself whether a post might be bullshit.

I bet Wilson told Barnes "resign with dignity or be fired disgracefully" during their meeting the other night, hence the lack of communication from the city. Then he waffled after the news leaked, hoping he could squeeze more money out of a prolonged separation. Wilson stood her ground and he caved.

Email just went out internally at City Hall: Shon Barnes has (officially) resigned as police chief of Seattle.

so, to review, Seattle: wearing a pin that calls out ongoing genocide against Palestine is so bad that it can get you sent home from work, while wearing a shirt in support of perusing children's genitals before admitting them into women's sports can... get critics sent home from work

today's Jennings discourse is unsurprising. months ago, he showed up in my replies when I suggested ppl boycott *all* things Paramount/CBS to suggest I was 1) wrong and 2) a "slacktivist." he then never replied to what I thought was a fair media-ownership question, so I still boycott Jeopardy.

wait... so... did the state of Rhode Island conspire with the LA Clippers to pay Kawhi Leonard under the table?! this whole story is descending into potential federal-law madness! cc @pablo.show's latest ep + this report, which asks more questions than it can possibly answer.

The two-time NBA champion’s involvement was revealed after a 10-month investigation by Target 12, “Pablo Torre Finds Out” and Hunterbrook.

I too would like to clear over $200k to do the "hold me back, Slater" thing to a hothead police chief - who's also my longtime homie annnnd who I probably had to hold back the same way after having too many at our frat parties (if this is confusing, scroll up ECB's thread to watch)

Erica C. Barnett@ericacbarnett.bsky.social · last wk.

The guy telling Barnes, "Let's go, man" and hustling him off is Alex Ricketts, his Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity brother and chief of staff. Responding to someone's question in this thread, he makes $230,000.

hey @mayor.seattle.gov this is the current face of our police force, angrily confronting a calm and reasonable question. is this what we want representing our city less than a full day after a serious tragedy? the cited video matches ECB's description.

Um holy shit - Police Chief Shon Barnes got PISSED at @soseaemerald.bsky.social reporter Connor Nash when Nash asked about my reporting that Barnes is out of town a lot; Barnes said, "No YOU listen!" and then angrily said my "reports are WRONG." My reporting is based on his schedule.

I just got two texts from friends checking on me, on a day I specifically started a new less-internet detox regimen. I was nowhere near Seattle Center today, thankfully. my heart is broken for anyone who was.

I finally watched PlayStation's latest trailers for the Wolverine game, and I can't help but see the fan-made "make Aloy prettier" filter applied to Wolverine's face when he's unmasked, I do not quite understand what they're doing here

In order to test splitscreen on the newest Halo, I grabbed my Xbox Series X from storage (no splitscreen on PC for... reasons?). The mere act of switching from WiFi to Ethernet led to a hard crash. Two reboots later, download is still frozen with no clarification why. Back to Xbox, they say.

huh, same day as Xbox's ad-based game-streaming news, Amazon announces they're finally putting its own game-streaming product somewhere ppl might actually find it: in the Amazon Video app. aka, copying what has worked for Netflix. but, gosh, do Amazon staffers actually test and talk about Luna? 1/2

Prime Video is Getting Games via Amazon Luna

Starting today, Prime members with a Fire TV in the US and UK can play Luna games inside the Prime Video app, alongside the shows, movies, and sports they already watch.

this reads like a student council nominee being asked by every kid in their class for a free candy bar, only in this case, every "kid" is a different red-state senator and every "candy bar" is a blatant ask for an illegitimate favor. it's not a confirmation hearing, it's a swamp-filling

Alarming stuff happening. Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee know they have the power to block Todd Blanche from becoming Attorney General permanently—he can't lose a single vote. Several Senators are now extorting Blanche into tackling an anti-abortion wish list to get their approval 🧵
