I will be advertising a funded PhD studentship shortly, for a project on adding psychological theory (social identity) to modelling of epidemics ( @leverhulme.ac.uk funded, with Marijn Stok). The studentship will start in January 2027. Get in touch now for informal enquiries.

Unfortunately @samuelfinnerty.bsky.social & I didn't solve the #ClimateCrisis in this occasion 😫 But we did learn that 'Daybreak' is an excellent game! ✅️ ... and that we need a bigger table next time 😆
Of course, we must ask not only what actions are seen as most appropriate and credible for scientists to do, but also what actions have the most influence. This remains an area requiring further inquiry.
"We, the undersigned, urge the Prime Minister to convene a live, televised emergency briefing, delivered by independent experts." We've an open letter in the FT today calling on Andy Burnham to hold a national emergency briefing on climate and nature.
Andy, we totally agree. Over 100 MPs back our Parliamentary Call for a live televised emergency briefing on the climate and nature crisis. www.nebriefing.org/parliamentar... Another 28 have signed the EDM edm.parliament.uk/early-day-mo...

Woken at 4am by wildfire smoke filling the house. Southeast Wales, one of the UK's wettest regions, is shrouded in smoke today. You can feel it in your lungs. The climate crisis is now.

In just six months, Mamdani has already made huge progress on: -Lowering rent -Enacting universal childcare -Taxing the super rich -Improving city buses -Cracking down on junk fees and subscription traps -Protecting gig workers from wage theft This is what delivering for the people looks like.
So excited to see this! Over 4 episodes I cover the hugely alarming conclusions of the Joint Intelligence Ctte Report, shamefully suppressed by Government, & explore its implications for our food and water security. @nebriefing.bsky.social @climatemajority.bsky.social @chrisgpackham.bsky.social
Climate breakdown isn't just an environmental issue - it's fast becoming a national security crisis. Our major new investigative series with Caroline Lucas starts Friday, exclusively for TRIP + members.
Wildfires in Europe so far this summer have led to Spain's deadliest in decades, with temperature anomalies peaking around +9°C in France and Germany and a high of 45.1°C in southern Spain. But how is the UK 'fire wave' after its first 'megafire' that burnt for four days in Dava Moor in May? 1/n
Only 40% of Brits think the recent heatwave was 'very likely' down to climate change. Yet #climate scientists say it was "virtually impossible" without human-caused warming. The link went unmentioned in nearly 3/4 of news stories, so the media is letting us down. #EndClimateSilence

This amendment would ban oil & gas donations to UK political parties. Given the urgent need to transition to renewables to tackle the rising threat of climate change, this seems like a no-brainer for all MPs to support. Please share and ask your MP to back it. 🙏
This extreme weather of the past week isn't a one-off. It's part of a dangerous new norm. The oil and gas companies fuelling the climate crisis - and driving up your energy bills - shouldn't be funding our politics. I've tabled an Amendment to ban oil and gas donations to political parties.
The AfD are developing an AI tool to generate endless volumes of rage bait & Nazi propaganda like a perpetual version of the “2-minute hate” from “1984”.

@nature.com dedicated last week's issue to Trust in Science. Much of interest discussed there, particularly how trust in science remains relatively high (though fragile with some), and that we must distinguish scientists being trusted from whether they have influence.
On the topic of influence, some scientists engage in climate advocacy & activism to influence action. For a review on the effects of climate advocacy and activism by scientists, we reviewed the literature on the reasons for it & its effects on perceptions of science journals.plos.org/climate/arti...

Too many of us repeat the statement that trust in science is falling. Is it really the case? The data don’t support this conclusion in a straight forward way. Science may have an influence & comms problem more than a trust problem, in fact… but it’s complex 👇🏻 🧪 www.nature.com/articles/d41...

A strange article in Nature, which appears to lay the blame for falling trust in science at the feet of ... scientists. Without a mention of the years-long assault on expertise by the media and politicians.
As someone in this picture I find it a little odd that @natureportfolio.nature.com chose this image to illustrate the point. We were very careful when choosing a slogan for our signs that it be scientificly defenceable. "Science says New Oil & Gas = Death" is a plain statement of fact 🧵
I bring great news! Reform have lost their motion to rescind West Norfolk's climate emergency declaration and associated climate action It wasn't even close: 37-7 And several councillors were absolutely furious about Reform's shenanigans
Today's the day! The heat has relented and Reform finally have their chance to persuade King's Lynn and West Norfolk' Council to turn their back on climate action I'll be live-tweeting from the debate
8/ If you want to read more on this topic I recommend this newly published narrative review by Finnerty et al. Who have done a great job at giving an overview on the latest research published on the topic of climate advocacy by scientists
Should scientists advocate for climate action? Our new review @plosclimate.org finds there is no single answer. The effects of scientist advocacy depend heavily on context, including who is speaking, what they are advocating for, and who is listening. Open access: journals.plos.org/climate/arti...
