I can relate to the stress of waiting for paper checks to arrive, and a 2-week transit time is about right these days. Maybe you could share a "story" about a check that got lost and what a pain it was for your client to stop payment. "Now they pay all their contractors by ACH." #FreelanceFriends
Finished proofreading my client's B2B book. Lots of formatting issues. Em dashes with spaces around them and some without, TOC formatting, missing page numbers, straight quote marks mixed with curly, etc. Too many years as a magazine editor not to have those things jump out at me. #FreelanceFriends

I'm with Amy on A1. If you carry out work in phases, you say, "Let me finish this phase, and then I will take a look." If they want it as part of the current phase and it has to happen, usually a separate project fee is to be prepaid or paid ASAP. #FreerlanceFriends
A1. I have no hard-and-fast rules about this. For anyone who stayed with me during the pandemic (or this year tbh), they get a long leash. If it's in my wheelhouse and fast, a small upcharge or none. I cleaned up some photos for a client this year, nominal charge. #FreelanceFriends

A2a. How I stay focused: Handwritten 10-day list runs my schedule. It includes due dates and commitments. Top priorities only. Ideas go in notebooks with a date range on the cover. Engagement calendar is where I tally what happened that day, including biz mileage. #FreelanceFriends
