"What is certain, however, is that a vast sum of our money will be wasted, countless Torontonians will find themselves profoundly inconvenienced for extended periods, and, eventually, a cyclist will get struck by a car. But at least the congestion will be worse." spacing.ca/toronto/2026...

I should do a video about the A Fold Apart #gamedev process and data layout to show all the weird hoops we needed to jump through to: make the Unity editor run without totally bogging down, let the team work on the same parts of the game at the same time, and make the runtime work with <1.25GB RAM.

In #Unity3D, you need to worry about dependencies. If a scene references an asset, it will get loaded into memory (EVEN IF HIDDEN). We broke our game into hundreds of environment-only scenes that can be dynamically loaded, and then made tools so we could work without creating dependencies. #gamedev

A cartoon office lit by a sunset. There are lineups of characters standing at different angles to demonstrate lighting.

A LOT of work has gone into this. On most platforms, it will release as a new game, and we're working to make sure that owners of the original A Fold Apart will be able to get it for free. Please signal boost if you can!

I still feel bad for the spun out studios because they’ll likely need to conduct their own furloughs/layoffs while they seek project funding or acquisition. That kind of thing is heartbreaking. GDC 2025, I hugged a sobbing CEO who lost his biggest client and had to do layoffs almost immediately.

"This is a kids' game, and it's layering multiple currencies atop one another to obfuscate the cost of things, as well as using pop-ups, timer bars, and "buy" buttons to offer temporary boosts and, generally speaking, remove the game's in-built friction."

I've been playing games for 40 years, writing about them for 20, and I'm here to say parts of Roblox need to be legislated out of existence

This platform is a disgrace, and regulators need to act.

Longtime college friend of mine, Mike Prinke, was among those laid off at Epic Games: he has been fighting terminal brain cancer, and now he, his wife, and kid, have no income or health insurance. Sharing here in hopes it can reach the right people on their behalf. #epicgames

I’m so angry about this. I get that bureaucracy can be a nightmare but this is insane. It’s already nearly a decade behind schedule (with electrification promised in 2017, 2024, 2027 IIRC). Kicking something down the road 10 years is like planning to do nothing.
