A lime green convertible MGA, a sports car manufactured by the British company MG from 1955 to 1962. Only 100,000 of these sports coupes were produced. Today an MGA in mint condition is highly sought after by collectors. And Alaric is the rarest of collectors, seeking out the rarest of MGAs. He has heard stories, going back decades, of one particular MGA, sold in 1958 to a barrister in London. It is said that the dashboard-mounted rearview mirror of this MGA is especially well-suited for catoptromancy, or divination through mirrors. According to the legends, should a driver park the car under a willow tree at midnight, the driver can look into the scrying glass of the rearview mirror and see premonitions of the driver’s death. Alaric is willing to pay anything for this car. Any price.

I was so elated when I first learned this

The common name for our species, “human”, has a pretty simple etymology: it comes from Latin, via French. Six or seven centuries ago, the word was humayne or humain, the same as in French at that time; a millennium before that, when the Romans were roamin’, it was humanus. It has, given how long we’re talking here, not changed much.

But if we go even further back, things get interesting. The origin of humanus is something of a mystery, but it’s most likely connected to homo – Latin for, well, a human. And homo, quite pleasingly, originates in the Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰm̥mṓ, a form of *dʰéǵʰōm which implies participation. And that latter word? That’s the Proto-Indo-European word for earth – meaning an ultimate translation of “human” is pretty legitimately “Earthling".
