Everything Technical on wheels

For aero you'd like sharp sidepod edges, but regs enforce a large minimum radius. Red Bull fit this 'floor body stay', which is a cable running down the ridge of the sidepod. Rules allow body work near this to have just a 20mm radius 😉 #F1 #F1tech #BritishGP 📸 @xavigazquez

Since the early 2000s to get a seamless gearshift #F1 gearboxes run two selectors, one controls odd gears, the other even gears. But the gearbox needs to know the exact position of each gear, which is done by a process called 'learning' Without this, the shifts have to be slower

Williams were late to the SLiM-wing trend in Monaco, but have arrived at the #BarcelonaGP with an updated triple wing set up 🐫 Also one detail I've never noticed is a tiny vane next to the cockpit, which was not on the launch car, but has been there all season long! #F1 #F1tech

These fwings are getting interesting fast. The underside have strakes to build rotation into the inwash caused by the wing elements. A raised leading edge is followed by a closing tunnel, increasing the pressure delta under the footplate powering these strakes. This rotation likely merges dstream

Amongst the updates for Ferrari at the #BarcelonaGP are these add ons to the reshaped m front wing endplate. The outside gains a canard, a small rear vane & a reshaped forward vane. Underneath the stepped inner footplate sees 6 new inwashing vanes. #F1 #F1tech

Mercedes have changed the rear wing extensions Technically, they're 'rear wing rotation brackets', but will act like wing extensions for more downforce The outer extensions have been repositioned & extended at the centre of the wing, where they will be more effective #F1 #F1tech

After a slow getaway, #MV3 confirms that the engine failed, but the hybrid allowed him to make some kind of getaway. This is a new rule added earlier this season to prevent cars stalled on the grid. #F1 #F1tech #MonacoGP @tech_motorsport Explained here... motorsport.tech/formula-1/fi...

It's a blurry shot, but a rare glimpse of the @FIA #F1 safety data recorder (SDR) by Marelli Sitting in the cockpit, it has its own sensors & hooks into the car's canbus network. It isn't just crash recorder, but monitors & records the cars system for FIA legality checks.

Major changes to the bodywork around the Audi roll hoop. The side inlets are larger and there's a curious dip on the top surface below the T-camera. No other major changes are evident yet, but may be saved up for Barcelona... #F1 #F1tech #MonacoGP Pic xavier gazquez
