If I was to choose a desert island artist, Bruce Pennington would be near top of the list. For sheer weirdness, mystery and mood Pennington takes the cake.
Concept art for Alderaan’s capital city, Aldera by Ralph McQuarrie (1993)
Incredibly detailed art by Geoff Taylor for Games Workshop’s White Dwarf magazine and Warhammer box art
Tim White (1952 – 2020) left us much too early. I remember sci-fi book store shelves here in Australia in the late 1970s - early 80s were completely dominated by artists Chris Foss, Tim White and Peter Elson. I particularly loved White’s hyperrealistic style and vivid colour work (purple skies!)
Art by Gilbert Williams ‘Entrance into the Earth’ (early 1980s). I was lucky to license this piece for The Emerald, the new album by my metal project Observers. The Emerald was inspired by Gilbert’s otherworldly forests and hidden portals. I’ve admired his visionary art for many years.
Growing up, Chris Foss (born 1946) painted the landscapes of my imagination and his art helped sell many books to me I would not have otherwise purchased! His iconic 1970s sci-fi art still feels as awe-inspiring today as it did then.

Production illustrations by Ron Miller for David Lynch’s Dune.
Concept art for 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). From The Making of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001 A Space Odyssey by Piers Bizony. The artist isn’t credited.
Cinefantastique Stars Wars double issue. I bought this new off the rack with my hard earned pocket money. It was a mind blowing look behind the magic of Star Wars and it really did seem like magic to this twelve year old.
The first Terminator comic book series on Dark Horse comics (1990). Cover art by Chris Warner
Art by Barclay Shaw ‘Superconductivity’ interior art for The Weekly Ready (1987)
Steve R Dodd ‘The Sands of Cydonia’ (2025, acrylic on canvas board)

From my collection - books published by Dragons’ Dream and its imprint Paper Tiger. Cofounded in 1976 by Roger Dean with Martyn Dean and Hubert Schaafsma, it published hundreds of titles until 2009 (?) Some of these are desert islands books for me.
