I had jury duty earlier this year. My pool sat outside a courtroom waiting to be called in. It never happened. When the judge finally let us go, he came out to tell us, “Don’t think you wasted your day.” He said our presence helped encourage several plea deals that avoided trial.

Americans are far too comfortable with plea bargaining. We are an outlier among English common law nations in allowing it (to the horror of other such countries) and the coercion used in the process is in contravention of 5A due process voluntariness. It's good to see SCOTUS address it.

My wife and I like to do bingefests (usually around the holidays). This is the second summer we’ve done Denzel Summer Nights, because the man’s oeuvre is phenomenal. Tonight it’s American Gangster.

I went through the entire Hitchhiker’s series as a teen without knowing what the hell a Ford Prefect was. I can’t imagine enjoying those books without feeling the writer behind the book. (Granted, Adams didn’t write YA.)

"Kids don't want to feel the adult behind the book.” This seems silly. When I was a kid, reading an author like R.L. Stine, I knew that an adult writer was taking me on a spooky adventure. As books age, they become their own form of time travel. Wouldn’t kids appreciate historical references?
