Lewis, the COVID measures had profound impacts, of course. However, the extent of the damage was due to a decade of austerity and NHS cuts. The poverty gap is obscene and we were reactive, not proactive. Also, schools open vs closed was a false binary, the solution was to make them safe.

I'm a boomer who grew up in poverty; first in my family to go to uni, first to own their home thanks to the postwar social contract. I hate what successive government policies have done to our society. I mourn the death of the welfare state and redistributive economy.

New from me: Until recently, the gap between comfortably-off and just-getting-started could plausibly be crossed in a decade or two of hard work. Growth in asset prices means that’s no longer true: even a lifetime of striving doesn’t offer a realistic prospect of feeling you’ve “made it”.

At this point in 2026 Bordeaux, France has experienced more days above 40°C (104°F) than it had in the years from 1920 to 2025, and while it would be wrong to say that this is the end of the world, it certainly suggests that the world as we knew it has already ended.
