Terrific example of the complex moult strategies common across many tern species. Adult birds with 3 generations of feathers in one feather tract from definitive basic, alternate and supplemental moults (eg in the Primary coverts)👌

Bsky ornithological hivemind -- recently in Panama doing Wood-Quail playback experienced repeated incidences (across species&individuals) of forest raptors responding to Wood-Quail song. A first for me - anyone reading this experienced similar things?? Would like to hear from you! #ornithology

These are the relevant morphometrics to measure on a flycatcher. Although absolute measurements are very helpful, relative metrics, essentially proportions, are just as useful. These are the features that can be measured from photos or what you see, with some training, in the field.

Acadian Flycatcher migratory routes rewritten. In spring, most of the migration takes a largely land-based western circum-Gulf path. In fall, they take an easterly route through Florida and across the western Caribbean, bypassing most of Texas. Most fall Acadians in Texas are misidentified.

Whenever I hear someone say that ebird data sucks and is unreliable, it tells me that they are repeating something they were told 15 years ago, and that they haven’t read any of the truly groundbreaking methods developments that have made ebird one of the best macroecological datasets on earth

other fun facts I learned today is that ebird data is garbage and too low quality to be used for anything and spatial products for good abiotic data are not available at resolutions <1km 🫠 News to me!
