The tragic events in Venezuela were the result of an earthquake doublet. What is a doublet, and what impact can it have on the effects of a major seismic event?

Yet another big earthquake this week? Coming through now is an M6.8 south of Mindanao, Philippines (same region as a few weeks ago).

Earthquake Early Warning in action. You don’t often get a camera isolated from the shaking, so that’s interesting. I’ve since read other comments about the video and alert being fake because we can’t predict earthquakes (💯 true) but it’s the effects that are being predicted, rapidly after the event.

Has anyone studied the effect of two overlapping large earthquakes? I imagine some of the energy waves would harmonise and amplify the ground motion, making the effects worse than if the larger event had occurred on its own. It would certainly increase the duration of the shaking.

It’s devastating either way, but can anyone confirm that there were two earthquakes? All the data I’m looking at shows a single event trace. That said, I’ve never looked at a doublet in the M7 range, so I may be missing something.

Ok you guys. Here’s the deal. The M7.1 in Venezuela was upgraded to a M7.2. AND it was followed shortly by a M7.5. Not good.

Are there two events? Looking at waveforms it looks like just one.

Two large earthquakes in two minutes in Venezuela, with the second event much large at M7.5. This looks complex.

So do you say “6.7 magnitude” or “magnitude 6.7”? I’ve always used the latter. My reasoning: it’s not a unit of measurement like 6.7 metres or 6.7 megatons. Originally the number was the relative order of magnitude above human perceptibility. Let’s brainstorm some unit names. I like sensillas ™️

Here's the final video in my WA Array series, documenting the third and final field trip of a deployment phase. It involves collecting and cleaning the equipment, ready to do it all again in the next area of Western Australia. This exposed equipment survived a cyclone in March with very few issues.

My last day in Western Australia and I felt an earthquake! I'm in Kalgoorlie and this magnitude 3.4 earthquake locates to about 5km from where I was lying in bed! Spending my morning playing with seismic data is the perfect end to my trip!

We are at the Geological Survey of Western Australia core library today cleaning the last of the sensors and digitisers in preparation for the next deployment in less than 2 months time.

It looks like the region to the NW of Mount Perry is active again. In 2015 a magnitude 5.2 earthquake kicked off a sequence of aftershocks with magnitude 2+ events occurring regularly for almost 2 years. The area has seen ongoing activity, but these latest events are the largest since February 2015.

Another magnitude 3.5 earthquake has occurred near Mount Perry in Queensland, at a few minutes past 4am. Comment if you felt it.

Last seismic station collected! Now we’re off to Kalgoorlie to clean them up for the next deployment.

We completed the last of the helicopter-serviced stations today at the most westerly point in Australia, on Dirk Hartog Island in Shark Bay. Thanks to GSWA for the opportunity to view this beautiful part of the state from the best perspective.

This very cute gecko was nestled in one of the stations we pulled out today. Pity I couldn’t get a photo of it sitting on one of our Gecko Seismographs! This is the second station where we’ve found the solar panel detached from the frame, presumably blown off by Cyclone Narelle last March.
