The staff and guests of the hotel seem friendly, but also a little…different. She discovers a world of witches, werewolves, vampires and dryads; and that’s just her colleagues. One of the guests, a necromancer, starts a fight to distract the staff and Emily is the only one free to chase after him to a local churchyard. Destroying the spell and battling the angry necromancer she realises she was too late as the decaying body rises from the grave. She is initially horrified, before realising that the dead man, Kenneth, is only dreadful on the outside. He was an old-fashioned gentleman and remains so, and he’s desperate for a pint before the pub shuts. When Kenneth is captured, the vengeful necromancer abducts Emily to sell on the occult black market, where naïve young women are merchandise. She wakes in a Spanish town, a transport hub for this other world, and must escape before she’s trafficked. She doesn’t know where to go or who she can trust, so it would be foolish to try and rescue Kenneth, but she can’t bear to leave him to a fate literally worse than death.
