Back-to-back papers! Following our recent work on Restriction-modification systems in 𝘕𝘦𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘢 𝘨𝘰𝘯𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘩𝘰𝘦𝘢𝘦, we now show that targeting type I CRISPRi to the leading strand of the 𝘨𝘢𝘳 R-loop/G-quadruplex region upstream 𝘱𝘪𝘭𝘌 restores pilin antigenic variation in a G4-locked strain or a 𝘨𝘢𝘳 mutant.

@selmamhm.bsky.social Shows how a Type I CRISPRi module targeted to the leading strand can replace the actions of a guanine quadruplex and small RNA R-loop in Neisseria pilin antigenic variation. doi.org/10.1128/mbio... #evolution #mevoSky #evoSky #microSky #scienceSky

And there it is: FDA has approved zoliflodacin for gonorrhea as well. That makes two new antibiotics to treat this STI and it means a fascinating debate now about how to use these drugs in a way that will delay resistance as much as possible… 🧪 #IDsky
