Passing Garsdale. 19 April 2026. #railway #photography

Avanti West Coast Evero bi-modes 805011 and 805009 speed past a cleared semaphore signal at Garsdale as they work 9Z66 Carlisle to London Euston on the last day of WCML diversions over the Settle & Carlisle.

Semaphores at Cattal. 14 July 2019. #railway #photography

Viewed from the Harrogate-bound platform at Cattal, two semaphore arms - Cattal’s starter and the motor-operated distant for Whixley Level Crossing - on a substantial bracket. The manually-operated crossing gates are closed across the tracks. Beyond the gate is a further semaphore signal.
Since this photo was taken, quite a bit of modernisation work has taken place, extending the double track a little further along towards the bridge in the distance, resulting in the removal of the semaphore signal beyond the level crossing. The crossing gates have also been replaced with new metal fixtures designed to imitate old wooden gates.

Semaphore signal LE29 at Leuchars, to the left of the track which curves off to the right under an old stone bridge. The embankment is a pretty mixture of greens and yellows and pinks.

Approaching Oxmarsh Crossing. 19 October 2024. #railway #photography

Having just departed New Holland station working 2F88 Barton-on-Humber to Cleethorpes, the rear half of EMR DMU 170515 is seen here paused at Oxmarsh Crossing; at the front, the driver is returning the single line token for the section to Barton to the signaller. A very new cleared semaphore signal - numbered OX27 - is just next to the back of the train.

On a rather foggy winter morning, EMR DMU 158854 speeds past a cleared semaphore at Manea working 1L06 Liverpool Lime Street to Norwich. Part if one of the station platforms can be made out just beyond the signal box by the level crossing.

With the marvellous S&C South Junction signal box on the left, the tail end of Avanti WC Evero bi-mode 805008 crosses the junction at Hellifield working 1Z66 Carlisle to Preston. 805004 comprised the other half of this 10-car set. West Coast Railways class 57 - 57314 - is in a siding on the right.
