Writing… I kept thinking I needed to better convey that the main character is a Merchanter, not just using her ship to transport goods for others from one star system to the next. I spent yesterday and today thinking about how to do it. Today I took pen and notepad, covered a whole page with dialog…
It looks like the month of August will have Captain Future stopping a bat attack with a gun that blows smoke rings.
Writing… One week ago I scribbled the beginning of a scene, but I set it aside because it didn’t feel right. I tried other beginnings, but they didn’t feel right. Today I looked at that original version. It feels right now. All I have to do is to tell it as something happening right then at the…
I just watched 2023’s movie “Round and Round”, in which a young woman is stuck reliving the same seventh day of Hanukkah again and again and again, and finds a way out with the help of gamers and an art teacher who really wants to draw comic-books.
Writing… It occurs to me that, instead of coffee, I could have one character favor hot cocoa.
Writing… I finished that scene’s first draft. I like it, but I need to tone down her wanting to bite people’s heads off. Maybe she can just nibble at the blankhole’s head.
Writing… That chapter’s short opening scene took a couple of hours to write, but it was worth it.
In the mail… 1972’s #161 of “The Incredible Hulk”, by Len Wein and Herb Trimpe… This was my first exposure to Hank McCoy, who since then has been my favorite mutant. Heck… His idea of crossing into Canada discreetly was to drop his ‘normal’ disguise while apparently abducting his lady companion.
In the mail today… Allen Steele’s newest novel “Lemuria 7”, a 200-page book which stitches together three related hard-SF novellas.
Writing… I still don’t have a firm image of what needs to happen in the complete rewrite of those next chapters. I have a broad idea of how to end that part of the plot at least. So, instead of THINKING about it, I started WRITING and I’ll see where inspiration takes me…
Now's a good time for folks to buy my book of five Old Man stories because every chapter in the fifth one takes its title from a phrase in Tennyson's "Ulysses." Isn't that a good reason? (All five stories previously appeared in Asimov's Science Fiction.) www.amazon.com/dp/B0GQLVG6W...

Writing… I spent some time trying to provide some information about the main character’s mother. I tried in one place. It felt like a clumsy infodump. I thought of another place. Same issue. Yet another place. Same. I eventually decided to call it a day and move on to non-writerly activities…
I just finished reading Jane Yolen’s “Briar Rose”, which retells the story of Sleeping Beauty as a tale of the Holocaust. Wow…
Writing… I may have to go thru what I’ve already done and see if there are as many references to a coffee mug as I think.
This week’s comics harvest… Yes, that is a one-shot prequel to Terry Moore’s “Rachel Rising”…
Writing… Those two chapters need to be completely rewritten. I know what the beginning has to be. I know what the outcome has to be. I have some notions of what has to happen between those two points, but nothing firm yet.
Writing… Now that chapter is as it should be. Finally. Really.
Reading Jane Yolen’s “Briar Rose”, which retells Sleeping Beauty during the Holocaust…
Writing… Something bothered me in yesterday’s rewriting of that chapter’s re-rewriting so I did some rewriting this morning.
I’ll refrain from saying ill words about that dead. I’ll be thinking them though.
Writing… I have fulfilled today’s goals… Now off to pump iron (or tin at best) at the gym…
