Our mission is to lead humanity’s quest to understand the origins and prevalence of life and intelligence in the universe and share that knowledge.

#PPOD: At first glance, this is just another image of Earth. But look closely, and you will be able to make out Proba-3’s Coronagraph spacecraft hiding in plain sight, covering parts of the Indonesian Archipelago to the right of the Indian Ocean’s vast expanse. 🧪 🔭

A view of Earth from space fills almost the entire image against a black background. The planet is shown from above the Indian Ocean, with Africa on the left, India in the upper right, and Southeast Asia along the right edge. The image is split by a vertical slider, with the right side in colour and the left side in black and white. Moving the slider to either side reveals more of that version of the image. The coloured image on the right is dominated by the deep blue ocean in the centre of the image, while white swirls of cloud stretch across the continents and seas. A small dark spacecraft with a few shiny parts and a solar panel orbits near the right edge of the planet.

#PPOD: In this July 6, 2026, image, NASA’s JWST’s Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) reveals the nearby galaxy Centaurus A, exposing the dusty structures and hidden activity that shape this unusual system. 🧪 🔭 👩‍🔬

#PPOD: NASA's Curiosity Mars rover captured these clouds just after sunset on March 19, 2021, the 3,063rd Martian day, or sol, of the rover's mission. The image is made up of 21 individual images stitched together and color corrected so that the scene appears as it would to the human eye. 🧪 🔭

The SETI Institute's Wow! Literary Award invites writers and poets working in literature, speculative fiction/sci-fi, experimental poetry, and philosophy to submit original, unpublished creative work that reflects and expands on the SETI Institute’s “Intelligence and Consciousness” research area...

Dr. Tom Esposito focuses on the architecture and evolution of exoplanetary systems and studies the structures of young solar systems through direct imaging of their circumstellar debris disks – rings of dust and ice that trace collisions among orbiting pebbles, boulders, and planetesimals. 🧪

In 1977, the detection of a brief radio signal prompted SETI astronomer Jerry Ehman to write a single word in the margin of a computer printout: "Wow!" Nearly fifty years later, the famous Wow! signal continues to capture our imagination... 🧪 🔭 👩‍🔬 🐡

The Virtual Planetary Laboratory (VPL), one of NASA's flagship astrobiology research teams, has officially moved its institutional home to the SETI Institute. We are thrilled to welcome @vpl-seti.bsky.social and introduce the many talented scientists and researchers who are now part of our team. 🧪 👩‍🔬

NASA's next great space telescope is almost ready to launch—and it has a remarkable trick. The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope will carry a powerful coronagraph, an instrument that blocks the light of distant stars so astronomers can directly observe the planets orbiting them. 🧪 🔭 👩‍🔬

PRESS RELEASE Although the path of totality for the August 12 solar eclipse is thousands of miles away from California, Bay Area audiences can experience the event in a truly unique manner: set to a live musical performance by the International Space Orchestra (ISO)... 🧪 🔭 👩‍🔬 🐡

Art shapes space exploration just as space exploration shapes art—and that’s certainly true in the case of the Red Planet. Even as talk of a future crewed mission intensifies and the prospect seems more feasible, art continues to buoy such ideas and their implications, both real and fanciful. 🧪 🐡

What does it mean to the various scientists at the SETI Institute to “listen” to the universe? Remember, they don’t all audibly hear the universe; some see it, some measure vibrations, some create models, some feel like it’s learning an entirely new language. Let’s listen in... buff.ly/mrWbqqc 🧪 👩‍🔬

#PPOD: This composite photo released on July 17, 2026, shows the crescent of Mars growing as NASA’s Psyche spacecraft approached the planet for a gravity assist. Psyche flew by Mars on May 15, 2026, using the planet’s gravity to gain speed and slightly tilt its trajectory. 🧪 🔭

Concentric orange crescent shapes form a repeating spiral like a tunnel of cloud-covered planetary crescents against deep black, creating a hypnotic, recursive depth effect. The crescents are Mars as seen by the Psyche spacecraft.
