The Society for Historians of the Early American Republic is dedicated to exploring US history from 1776-1861.

Yesterday, President Carolyn Eastman enthralled the audience at her #SHEAR2026 Presidential Address with a discussion of "Demagogues in the Early American Republic.” She revealed that the satirical language used at the time expressed profound concern about the persuasive potential of public speech.

We kicked off #SHEAR2026 yesterday with the President’s Plenary on “How to Tell the Truth about History in 2026.” We heard from scholars who challenged us to show up, embrace the messiness of history, and always “show your work.” Followed by a reception at Carpenters’ Hall with SHEAR cookies.
