I've had a lot of people checking in, so I just wanted to say: I'm safe and my place did not burn down. I'm back home and anxiously checking the situation, but nothing has gone horribly wrong here yet.

my favorite kind of musical experience is listening to well-mixed and dimensional sound art/field recordings late at night and getting scared because I can't tell which sounds are happening inside my headphones

I normally don't like anison jazz cover things, but this Evangelion one is so special. Conducted by Shiro Sagisu, the series composer, himself. Megumi Hayashibara singing the vocal themes. There's an arrangement of a late '50s Miles Davis tune. Moyoco Anno drew the cover art. It's got everything.

I do think it's cute to see people watching End of Evangelion for the first time and patting themselves on the back for identifying its themes as if the final third of the film isn't spent monologuing them to you directly. it's a rite of passage

one little thing I find endearing about Hideaki Anno is his enduring love of cats. the Gainax office cat appears in a Kare Kano ED, he voices one of the cats in FLCL himself, and in the Tokyo street segments of End of Evangelion he makes sure to sneak in a shot of this beautiful creature.

still just as devastating as it was when I first saw it at the age of sixteen. it's a good feeling to check your progress against an apparition of your past, newly determined to live a truer life, and to feel like you've mostly done right by yourself.

I love having seasons where I renew my lifelong obsession with evangelion. there's hardly anything more fun than staying up all night reading evageeks forum threads until you're falling asleep at the computer

it's funny to have been told for so many years that Evangelion Death & Rebirth is nonessential viewing when it's maybe the most interesting anime anthology film ever made. the new animations, music cues, and redrawn shots are so compelling.
