Panel 2: I interrupt their conversation with "Hey. Autism is not a negative, it's a difference."
Panel 3: the guy asks me "Who are you to say that?" I answer "Someone who knows what it's like, thank you. We may think and act differently compared to the average person, but using it as an insult makes us feel invalid for being that way.

Sharing a comic I made for #AutisticComicTakeover and #AutismAwarenessMonth ❤️ It’s called “A certain magic” and it was inspired by a research article of the same name (Watts et al, 2024). I wanted to talk about communication struggles among neurotypes and the joy of finding a community ❤️

In the first panel a winged Unicorn is bowing, saying “A bow…”. In the second panel it swirls, saying “A swirl…”. In the third panel it dances with a Pegasus, saying “Another day of going through the motions”. In the fourth panel we zoom in on his sad expression and prosthetic wing, and the text says “Hoping they don’t realise how artificial this dance feels, how much I’m performing”. In the last panel the unicorn loses a feather and the Pegasus notices. The text says “…I suspect they do”.

In the first panel the Unicorn is fixing their wing with glue and the text says “For autistic individuals, fitting in demands constant maintenance”. In the second panel the Unicorn is sitting alone, watching five different Pegasus horses flying and having fun together. The text says “Most of the time I’m so worn out and on edge I don’t get to enjoy the thrill of flying, of belonging”.

In the first panel the Unicorn is walking alone and the text says “And it was easy to believe I was the only one to blame…”. In the second panel the Unicorn meets a second Unicorn with no wings and the text says “… until I met someone just like me”. In the third panel the Unicorns are playing, using their horns, the text says “Someone I could relate to in the unique way that we do”. In the last panel the Unicorn are happily playing and the text says “And even though our sensory needs sometimes clash, I get them, and they get me”.

In the first panel the Unicorn and Pegasus are arguing. The text says “As the Double Empathy Problem suggests, communication difficulties aren’t one-sided. I struggle to relate to non-autistic people, but they also find it hard to understand me”. In the second panel the Unicorn is happy and the text says “That’s why, when my autistic friend and I are together, I’m suddenly filled with this weightless, effortless joy”. In the third panel their horn is shining with magic and the text says “A certain magic”. In the last panel the two Unicorns are flying without wings thanks to their magic horns. The text says “And I realise… flight doesn’t require wings at all”.
