Gelobt seist du, Niemand Currently studying Bible, Hebrew and Rabbinic lit now with Professorial validation of my forays into Critical Theory (poor fellow) https://simonereadstexts.substack.com/

continuing this saga, I think I have some leads on the giver of the bible (I need to confirm via primary sources) but I've got another mystery - something written on the rear endpaper (under a note dated Jan 1942, on the Tomatin)

this is the kind of place that insufferable Church History nerds hang out right? I need to find who a historical figure was who would have known the wonderfully named Henry F Butts prior to his departure as a missionary from England to New Zealand in Dec 1841.

I don't know Greek, but I know enough to think this isn't proper Greek - perhaps someone who has learnt Greek and been in the "not knowing enough Greek to be dangerous yet" stage might be able to shed some light on it?

I am an English major at heart and have ranted about how Eliot is terrible, and my father also majored in English and, while tipsy, made me rage and rage by saying that when it came down to brass tacks, Ulysses is a book about nothing, and thus the proverbial tale told by an idiot we are

people are like "em1ly w1lson went out of her way to be abrasive" but i just don't think that's true. a lot of us are just like this. at one point in his ancient greece lectures donald kagan *just as a random aside* says he thinks rousseau is a "poisoned apple in the history of the human race"

look, if there's anything to actually complain about regarding the Odyssey movie it has to be that it doesn't open with frying kidneys nor describe the sea as "scrotum-tightening"

I am hearing that on his deathbed Lindsay Graham received the light of Islam and unhesitatingly recited the Shahada. Even now he looks down on the Ummah from the gardens of Jannah. Truly there is no god but Allah, and Mohammad is his prophet!

A proposal for a paper entirely via the title: "why is There a 'Why is There a Book of Job and What Does it do to You When You Read it?' and What Does it do to You When You Read it?"

at risk of being a boring ass by joining the pile on I think there are two very important things being missed in everyone's responses to this, the first being very basic: if this were true how would we know this? At the very least there would be documents from command saying something like this.

very tempted to quote anyone citing that bit in Galatians in support of James Talarico with the rejoinder that actually the rest of the letter relies on the reality of the insitution of slavery for the whole bit about those who are in slavery and those who are free and inheritance...

since there's discourse on bluesky culture vs twitter culture again, I just wanna say that on bluesky I haven't had a bunch of people I was friends with turn on me and call me a "metaphysical zionist" for pointing out that the theological concepts a philosopher was invoking against...

it's cool how bluesky has now (at least for the first time I've noticed) matured enough that the "mistaking a descriptive statement for a prescriptive one" thing is endemic this platform might develop into twitter yet at this rate
