Shortly off to Manchester Airport for son arriving back from a month in Tanzania. Usual quick pickup not an option as we all want to see him come through the gates. Airport recommends pre-booking for parking for longer "as it's cheaper". Cost 1hr rollup: £13.20 Cost 1hr booking: £50.20 50 quid!!!

I suspect this isn’t wide known. If you have a 5-day heatwave where max temps stay constant at eg 40 C, on the first day you might have 1,000 excess deaths, on the 2nd - 1,500, 3rd - 2,000 etc. In other words, the impact of heat stress is cumulative.
Ben Barclay@benbarclay.bsky.social · 5d agoFor anyone confused by the fact that 30,000 is much more than 5 times 3,400, it’s because a continuous multi-day heatwave causes more deaths than multiple 1-day temperature spikes.
Managed to remember my lines on returning to First Timers' Welcome at #parkrun which was handy 😂 Decent run and now enjoying post-run coffee, it's a good start to the weekend!
Pleased to see such a senior figure emphasising climate change risks and need for financial services sector to work on it. Both Allianz & UniCredit have improved their approach in last 3 years so change is happening. (Sure others have too, I just know those two directly)

Bordeaux, France, has now recorded more days above 40°C in 2026 alone than during the entire 105-year period from 1920 (when observations began) to 2025. This is deeply shocking.
If anyone's traveling on the A9 towards or away from Perth, traffic very slow owing to an accident (police managing traffic at Dunkeld turnoff when coming South). Unfortunately appears to be a fatality: we've never seen a big screen blocking off the entire road before)
More pressure on nuclear energy, to follow on from the increasing spare of temporary shutdowns European plants have had when the sea water intake gets too warm. A decarbonising asset increasingly being affected by the very climate change it's seen as helping counteract.

In latest installment of the kids are gonna be alright, currently receiving videos from Tanzania. So far teachers have killed themselves laughing while arriving to give what's now been dubbed 'El bollocko' before the boys performed a forfeit song to whole camp as their penance for their misdemeanor

One can only hope that this case can finally be solved. I'd never seen the final sentence referred to before regarding it and it gave me a jolt reading it given what happened.

Remember how when the casting for The Odyssey was revealed, it triggered all the right people? Having waded through the whole of *that* LRB review, I've got a gnawing suspicion that that still holds true. Feels not so much a critical review as the showing of true colours.
