I was lucky to see Sonny Rollins perform at Oberlin College in the early 90s. It was one of the peak musical experiences of my life: so brilliant and absorbing that I lost track of time and self consciousness and was completely inside the music. Blessings on his memory, what gifts he gave us. 1/2
It is with deep sorrow and profound love that we announce the passing of Sonny Rollins. The Saxophone Colossus died this afternoon at his home in Woodstock, NY at the age of 95. 1/2
Yes! Went on a birding trip to the Farne Islands last week, and my main takeaway was a deep appreciation of razorbills. Puffins are cute and all, but razorbills have Style.
Razorbills have the slickest design in the animal kingdom. They look like they were made by Yves Saint Laurent
at least he died doing something that he loved

I found this analysis , by a lawyer, helpful for understanding the Supremes’ “conversion therapy” ruling
The Supreme Court did not strike down conversion therapy bans today. Not nationwide. Not in Colorado. Not anywhere. Here's what actually happened in Chiles v. Salazar—and why the coverage you're seeing serves the conservative legal movement more than it serves you.
A good thread on the fire yesterday in central Glasgow
a lot of comments this morning about the rate at which old buildings in Glasgow go up in flames so I just want to say: as a bystander with no direct knowledge of this fire, but a good bit of knowledge about old buildings burning, i don’t think this one is sketchy. www.reddit.com/r/glasgow/co...
This skeet and replies are a really good discussion about the state of therapy in the UK, particularly the over-abundance of bad mechanised CBT-by-rote.
I am very much here as a safe space for everyone’s incredibly bad experiences with idiots applying CBT worksheets at them. I think every clever/sensitive/both person I know in the UK has had some experience like this. It is proper medical harm.
A great thread on the gender politics of choral music, particularly the veneration of boy choirs.
I was reading this interview from @annehelen.bsky.social on boys choirs, and the good they can do boys in terms of gender expression. And this is true! But I want to add something: The "magic" of the "boy soprano" has harmed adult femme singers. Walk with me. www.patreon.com/posts/multi-...
I'm 53 years old. I'm sure the US government has done things during my life that were more evil than the current war, although right now I'm struggling to think of one. Probably the US government has done stupider things than the current war.
the Patriots playing like shit in the Super Bowl is the next best thing to the Eagles making it
working at a wealthy uni that continues to rank highly and report a surplus and yet somehow is well into the items on tweet 3/4, thanks consultants
In the UK academic recession, you will be at one of these stages since many unis buy the same cuts model from the same consultancies. It is always the same process: *Talk of belt-tightening *Incidental savings (e.g. printing, refreshments) *Travel budgets cut *Promotion freeze (1/4)
#SomethingBeautiful there’s now a duck food station at Blackford Pond in Edinburgh where you can pay £1 for a batch of food that’s much better than bread for the birds.
5 classes I took as an undergrad because I wanted to: Western Representations of the Colonized Subject (English lit class) Bicycle maintenance Discrete mathematics Theoretical computer science Introduction to Women’s Studies I’m very lucky to have had a high quality liberal arts education
5 classes I took (as an undergrad) because I wanted to: - Homeric Greek - Literary translation - Data structures - Medieval towns - Differential geometry.
@jtfd.bsky.social some Great Lakes freighter content for you. (Spoiler: boats all now unstuck)
What’s better than 1 boat stuck? 2 Boats Stuck! The tug that went out to assist the freighter navigate the frozen water of Lake Erie is now also unable to make headway. The freighter is trying to make its way to its winter harbor in Ashtabula. (More info in alt text.) #BoatStuck
It took so much work and advocacy to get the Park Service to mark the lives of the enslaved workers in George Washington's house in Philly, and it's so heartbreaking to see the blank wall now. It's disgusting that the US government is deliberately erasing those lives.
Since I now have a tattoo that matches my handle, I must be a bsky power user, right?
Thanks to "well-meaning" "allies" I've now seen the homophobic shit some people are saying about Renee Good, as people repost it on bsky to talk about how bad it is. Look, folks, if you think you're queer-supporting and feel compelled to post this sort of crap you really need to check yourself.

I was today years old when I learnt that Prince wrote "Manic Monday". What???
Forty years ago, in late December 1985, The Bangles released Manic Monday, written by Prince under the pseudonym ‘Christopher’. Treat yourself 🎧
The bluesky Discover algorithm (which I mostly like, don't hate me) keeps showing me men's gym selfies. What can I tweak to not get this? Is it because I like #runsky? I'm much less interested in lifting and have negative interest in random pix of shirtless or nearly shirtless guys
I always think that Joseph is the most interesting person in Nativity paintings. Sometimes he's confused, sometimes he's a bit grumpy, sometimes he's just a good bloke trying to do his best. @bluejo.bsky.social _nails_ this last in this story.
