While we're at it....ask me how I feel about the G word and why I refuse to use it. I will replace the word "worldbuilding" with something more useful if it's the last thing I do. Good writers tell bad stories because of the stigma of this word.
Donut (Comms open!)@donutsthetic.bsky.social · 4mo agoIronically, worldbuilding is my favorite part of doing a story. Besides being fun to piece things together and polishing them, it’s also because I get to learn of other perspectives and lives. They’re entire worlds by themselves. Combined with other perspectives, it’s a universe.
#Worldbuilding The word carries the stigma of Tolkien’s Silmarillion, the bloated prose of Martin, the entire canon of science and speculative fictions. Worse, it staggers under tons of misconceptions: maps, constructed languages, and lore dumps. #writingcommunity open.substack.com/pub/skyforge...
Fessing Up: I HATE 'Worldbuilding'
It's time to come clean. My biggest pet peeve in story craft is 'worldbuilding'. Let me tell you why.

Don't forget that I write #fiction, too! My friends at #SumFlux held a little contest and while I didn't win, I did successfully make everyone hungry. Which was my goal. So, really, I did win. open.substack.com/pub/fictatio...

Roots extend. Branches reach. But the trunk of the tree, the stalk of the corn, the stem of the flower — they stay true. They thicken. They strengthen. They hold. Because growth isn’t about becoming someone new. #Worldbuilding #Skyforge #BlanketFortStorytellers #Discord

Voices Raised in JoyPunk I didn’t coin the term JoyPunk. I don’t know who did. But I know I’m not the only one carrying it forward. That’s the part that matters most: JoyPunk is communal. It’s cooperative. It is a chorus, not a solo. #writing #bingo #SummerCamp #JoyPunk #worldbuilding

Most writers treat worldbuilding like a scrapbook — maps, vibes, aesthetics, lore dumps, Pinterest boards. Pretty, but passive. Decorative. Harmless. But a story world isn’t decoration. It’s pressure. #Worldbuilding #Skyforge #TelevisionSky #WritingCommunity #WorldAnvil

What is it about Bluesky that feels so isolating to me? I don't know if it's something about the interface or the way that posts seem so scattered about. More than anywhere else it reminds me of Twitter, and I wonder if that's why I don't find it engaging? Just thinking out loud.
