The SLCMAD has detected #WestNilevirus (WNV) positive mosquito samples, and Box Elder County has detected its first WNV human case. Use an EPA-registered insect repellent & cover up exposed skin to avoid bites. The mosquitoes that carry WNV are most active at dusk and dawn.

A National Mosquito Control Awareness Week x National Pollinator Week crossover! DYK there is a non biting mosquito? Meet Toxorhynchites, aka the elephant mosquito. Adults feed on nectar, sugar, & sap. Their larvae feed on other mosquito larvae and have been used as biological controls before. 🦟

It's #nationalmosquitocontrolawarenessweek! 🦟 Do you know the mosquito life cycle? Egg --> larva --> pupa --> adult. The first three stages need water to survive! Empty & drain standing water to reduce mosquitoes. 🦟

The District will be using the Skeeter Meter; a communication tool created by the CDC to help spread local awareness of West Nile virus (WNV) risk. While testing for WNV doesn't start until July for the District, this tool will demonstrate the community's risk level throughout the season. 🦟

Surveillance of mosquitoes makes up a large portion of our work at SLCMAD. One trap used by the district is a carbon dioxide (CO2) baited trap. CO2 is a major attractant for female mosquitoes and lets them know when a host is nearby. Check out this paper from SLCMAD! doi.org/10.1371/jour...

Early this week the district set several adult mosquito surveillance traps. Two trap sites had higher mosquito numbers. The traps primarily consist of Culex pipiens, Culex tarsalis, and Culiseta inornata. As the season progresses, trapping will be moved from once per week to twice. 🦟
