Vinyl's eyes. Try staring directly between them and unfocusing your eyes for a bit.

A lesson in the self. #mlp #mylittlepony #art #drawing #octavia #suggestive

Octavia has chosen to pass on such knowledge to you. Good luck.

Octavia, as voted on SubscribeStar. My first real attempt at a comic page. It started as a brief musing and a very rough sketch, and now there's... this. I hope there is something of value for you to find here, as I found much value in its creation. And no, I don't mean that in a perverted sense. Get your mind out of the gutter.

It's difficult to shake the idea that I'll never genuinely experience these feelings. I can only live these moments through art.

Tired Tavi.

A sketch that I really liked, given a bit of a paint job. Painting is quite fun, honestly, though I'm sure I still have plenty to learn.

Was listening to "Hideaway" by Queens Of The Stone Age while working on this one.

an impossible job

Scootaloo has the important job of recording briefings for the future Overseers of the Stables built by Stable-Tec. Of course, it's not easy to read a script when you know everyone is doomed, and it's probably your fault.

Comm for Peachy Plume

Tried some new things with the shading this time around, more of a painter style than usual... I think it worked pretty well!

"Quit gettin' yourself almost killed!"

Comm for Tlas II. A changeling detective finds himself being scolded after nearly getting himself killed. Again. For the third time this month. Maybe Dr. Turnover has a point, or maybe she's just being a nag. Though... The bullet holes in his stomach would probably agree with her.

A good lot of experimentation here. When I bring up experimentation, I usually just mean "tried something I don't have much experience with, and am unsure if I pulled it off". This time around, the perspective and the fabrics were where said experimentation took place. If you're reading this, perhaps let me know how I did in those departments.

get well soon

Nurse Redheart with some reassuring words. May SubscribeStar vote result.

Sometimes you need to say a little more than "get well soon", especially towards those who are genuinely having a hard time. Physical illness often brings mental despair.

As for art satisfaction... I think I'm coming back to my stride, though it feels like I've forgotten how to draw forward-facing faces. Then again, I felt the same way a year ago.

basstavia

Octavia, but she plays bass.

Sat on this one for much longer than I intended to. It was originally a 30 minute sketch that I was really proud of at the time, but life got hectic and my confidence has been at an all-time low. I waited a month, tried to finish it, was heavily dissatisfied, then waited another month. I think it's at a place that I can be happy with now. Primary inspiration musically was "Pigs" by Pink Floyd. The bass in that song is very, very fun.

got a light?

Commission for Flash Note. Thank you!

Life's been hectic as of late. I'm trying to get back into the swing of things, but I've been saying that for months now, haven't I? Here's hoping things get better. Until then, at least we've got each other. And, of course, drugs. Drugs help.

Sketches for Gumdrop, thank you!

Mmm, sketch commissions. Honestly I like doing sketch commissions, because I like sketching. Never been a fan of the whole "line it and color it and shade it" thing, though sometimes shading feels like sketching.

Like mother, like daughter

Commission for GODOG.

Bullseye wielding a sharpened golf club, as her mischievous daughter pilots her towards adventure... by pulling her mane.

Yeah, I think this thicker-lines-comic-style is really working well. Gonna be playing around with it more as opportunities allow.

Commission for Peachy Plume

A cute, innocent mare sits peacefully. Behind her is a much less cute and innocent mare.

Kinda happy with this one. The dark lines and heavy use of black feel like a natural evolution from my usual sketchy artstyle. It's also pretty fun to draw fantastical creatures and horrific beasts, so I think I'll have to dip in this direction more with my personal work.

one hour vinyl click alt text for proper description

Spent about an hour on this to keep up the artistic habit. Simple idea, rough execution, could certainly be better but it was fun to play around with.

The past week has been very busy. Lots of focus on writing, as well as "life", as it always is. It's amusing how artists always just sum it up with that phrase, yeah? "Life got in the way". Why aren't we honest about these things? I was helping someone I care about with very troubling family issues. The ones I care for took priority over work.

More people should listen to Pink Floyd. Maybe we all could learn a thing or two from history, especially as we agree that the modern world is a piece of shit that will clearly only get worse. We all just look for someone to blame instead of ourselves.

working out character design things for tavi in the comic I figure as you go through life, the way you present yourself says a lot about where you are and how you feel about yourself and the world around you what do these tavis say to you?

in her shadow

Symphony Song.

A name few may recognize. She's an earth pony mare. She plays a stringed instrument and stands on her hind legs. She wears a bowtie. But Octavia was first. Maybe Octavia had a better design, or a more striking instrument, or more screentime, sooner. Whatever the case, there are many musical ponies who have no one to appreciate them, because they were simply too late to grace our imaginations.

I've wanted to do this character more justice ever since learning of her, and reading an overlooked fanfic that stars her. "Shattered", by Zeck, if you're curious. I have more I wish to do with her in the future, in my comic and such, but I never felt I could afford the time to just draw her for my own purposes. Thankfully, a commissioner came along with the prompt: "Surprise me. Literally anything."

And so, I have been paid to draw something I wish I could have drawn anyway, and I think that has made a big difference. It's not perfect, but I am quite proud of this.

Commission for Faultymusic and KoaBitez

Two ponies cozily watching a laptop together.

This one was my first attempt at something of a "true lineless" process, I still use some lines, but for the most part they were avoided beyond the sketch stage. Certainly looks more professional than my usual work, and it was quite interesting to play around with. I don't think I'll do lineless all the time, as I quite like the flavor my linework adds, but it's a nice skillset to have, and I can probably incorporate some of the techniques into my usual process.

sleepyhoers @sleepyhoers.bsky.social · 7mo ago

Commission for Tlas II

A bat pony and a changeling walk into a bar.

More experimentation with the process. First time I've ever tried to render drinks or pool tables, as well. Maybe not the most inspired or emotional piece I've ever done, but I'd like to think it's a bit more technically competent than my average work, and I think it makes a good story piece.

sleepyhoers @sleepyhoers.bsky.social · 7mo ago

Commission for Red

A feral-looking Octavia lunges forth, stopped only by Vinyl's magic holding up a broken chair leg. Fangs are bared and blood is splattered, remnants of a former meal. A moment in time from a story that the commissioner is developing, one that I wanted to do justice for maybe obvious reasons.

This piece was rather challenging and experimental, despite my interest in its subject matter. I've been generally struggling with the reality that my technical skill is not as strong as it could be, and I've been trying out different processes and mindsets when making art. I'm not 100% satisfied with my new process just yet, but this is a step above my other recent experiments, I believe.

I wonder if it's bad for business for artists to be honest about their struggles with the process. But frankly, the only people who matter are the ones who care about honesty.

Anticipation #mlp #mylittlepony #art #drawing

Octavia standing up with cello in hoof, facing blinding lights and a faceless audience.

This was specifically requested in reference to that one picture that went viral recently. I did my best to retain similar structure and energy to the original picture, but at the same time, I was also juggling the feel of the image as it was being drawn, and having to make compromises due to pony anatomy not translating perfectly from human anatomy. So in this sense, this piece is obviously referencing the original pic, but it has also veered in its own direction. I hope that I was able to do the original justice, but also that the blend was smooth and this piece brings something worthwhile in its own right.
