Hello new followers and friends! Today I’d like to request that if you’re considering subscribing to slowclap that you don’t! Not yet. Right now you’d mostly be supporting me, and that’s not why slowclap exists. Wait to pay until there’s a creator (or two, or more) signed up that you like!

The way that we fix this is by building pockets of the internet that are human created, controlled, and supported. Right now attention monetizes the same whether something is slop or not. Paying (even a little) for stuff worth appreciating is much harder to generate a replacement for.

As best as I can tell, there’s only two types of Patreon/Kofi supporters: - People trying to get something from you - People who are there to support you The latter aren’t there because of your paywall, and the former aren’t likely to stick around after they get what they want anyways…

I’m sorry, but how is this an acceptable UX? Maybe.. just maybe.. we should be focused on making websites people like to visit and making it easier for them to support us, rather than wringing every last ounce of attention economy value out of viewers like they’re a near-dry washcloth.

I honestly don’t understand all this “prove my writing isn’t AI” discourse. Can people not tell? It’s not like novels will just sell well on their own. People need to recommend them. The way out of this mess is simple: Build well. Share what you like. Support those doing it right. 💪

Please don’t have a $1 Patreon tier. Unless you’re Stripe, the economics on these just don’t add up. Supporters might not know this, but on a $1 sub, Stripe eats 33 cents and Patreon takes around 10. That means if you’ve got 5 active $1 subs only around 2.85 is going to creators.

Friends, I know AI is scary, especially if you’re a creative person. But the problem isn’t that there’s newer better clipart now. The problem is how this stuff is monetized. AI slop works because they make money the second your eyes hit the page. AI Art is disruptive because patronage is broken.
