So the Tolkien Society is doing two conferences next year. It's usual Oxonmoot (I just attended 2926 remotely) and "Tolkien 2027" to celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Silmarillion. Exact the are one month apart so pretty hard to attend both if you're outside the UK/EU
3 specialist tracks will run alongside the main program. 🔒 Ops and Security in Practice Hosted by Simon Lyall and Danishka Navin The latest technologies, tools, best and emerging practices, and cybersecurity realities for Linux and open technology operations. 👇

The anti-AI people are just finding out that most programming involves some degree of AI assistance and it is breaking them some of them A few talking of switching to a BSD operating system since Windows, Mac, Linux devs all use AI tools
So I'm just catching up and somebody wrote a pro-AI article in a The Tolkien Society magazine In response a bunch of people are demanding the retraction of the article, an apology from the editors and some level of removal of the article from the archives. Or they'll resign etc
Partner just opened a new bottle of vinegar because the old one was now very expired. This is the "new" one:
Here is my project for doing Auckland bus stop status. So you can see what buses are due soon at your stop soon Just 3 little python scripts Also includes some curl examples people might find useful if they want to talk to the Auckland Transport API github.com/slyall/auckl...

My project to use the Auckland Transport API seems to be mostly working. This output that shows buses due to arrive at your stop and is supposed. In "pretty" mode so it looks a bit like one of the physical boards
Why do I keep running into otherwise sane people who seem to believe that the solution to all of the problems with social media is to arrest and jail Mark Zuckerberg Nothing else needed. Just get him and everything will be solved

The NZ government rushed to sign us up for one more "Road of National Significance"—but with zero transparency on what it'll actually cost us all, by the time it's paid off. So @connorsharp.bsky.social has done the grim maths. Hold onto your hats, folks! 😬 www.greaterauckland.org.nz/2026/09/01/w...
Warkworth to Te Hana deal to cost us over $9,000,000,000? - Greater Auckland
A few weeks ago, I asked This differs from the ‘nominal value’, aka the amount of money that is actually paid (without adjusting for change in value due to inflation). In the MCERT documents, the brea...

Today is the first day of Civil Spring in New Zealand Still a bit cold but it has been warming up a bit in the last few weeks Guess I need to start wearing sunscreen again when I go out walking
Someone wrote: "Diet Lift Fanta Raspberry" What kind of commaless flavour is that? and I read "commaless" as an antonym of "Cromulent"
I wonder if there are stats out there showing that in the last 6 months the relatively number of releases in the last week of each month has decreased due to programmers running out of tokens
The downside of turning over your company’s engineering capacity to frontier AI labs is that you can literally run out of coding ability unless you pay up. Real life has become a Black Mirror episode.

I'm remotely attending Cascade Moot in Portland First talk is someone reading extracts from "Three Men in a Boat" and compare it with quotes from the lord of the rings about Hobbits. But it's mostly her reading funny passages so far signumuniversity.org/event/cascad...

Running LLM to analysis some text files and it got in a loop just redoing the same thing Only 16 cents wasted though since I'm using dumb models Maybe a smarter model wouldn't get in the loop My next attempt is a script that will submit files one at a time to LLM for classification

Conversation today: Me: Does anyone have a list of old conferences? Them: no Me: Oh, I found this page, looks like generated automatically Them: That has errors, I'll delete it I'll note this are just pages that list the schedule and presentations. The actual content is probably gone forever
Funny. I told some troll he was obviously trolling and he accuses me of being a mind reader So I pointed AI at his post and it agreed with me. So he then claimed I was not using my own brain and needed to use AI Guess thats why he's the troll. He's also banned
I read this and pictured the middle aged dude who flirts with and tells bad jokes to service staff. And then tells the lonely person they have to hit the bars and get drunk
Australia’s primary music chart will ban AI generated music from its charts after it turned out the most played song on the radio in July was AI generated. This is a lost battle. If the most popular song on the radio isn’t on your music charts, is your chart even relevant?
AI-generated songs banned from Australian music charts
Songs created mostly or entirely by artificial intelligence will be excluded from Australia's official music charts from this Friday.

An interesting idea that well written short messages are now a signal Certainly well written long text is not the signal it has been for the last few hundred years and society has been struggling with that
The Bigger Picture: My Blockbuster Life & Lessons Learned Along the Way by Jan Landau 4/5 Memoir of a film producer (Titanic etc). I think the early parts tend to work better with the last third being less interesting. But in general worth reading www.videoageinternational.net/2026/05/10/c...
Amazing how good AI video is getting. A Trailer for a animated Sci-fi movie thats basically a Pixar/Buzz Lightyear knockoff. I assume just this trailer exists Done by a guy with industry experience so looks good. Although closer to synopsis than a trailer www.youtube.com/watch?v=5vYs...

Funny. Spent a day teaching AI how to create a change ticket. Got a big skill file with all the details. I try it on a live incident and it produces a crap look ticket. I say "Hey, you missed a bunch of stuff, it should look like this ticket XXX-123" It fixes ticket. Looks great
