Kinda weird Mark Gatiss decided to make a feminist reworking of an E Nesbit short story, and freely changed loads of details, and his new version is still about a man who doesn't take a woman's writing seriously.

10 minutes into Woman of Stone and I already hate it.

Ghosts of Advent Day 11- A Wicked Voice by Vernon Lee A composer becomes haunted by the 'ghost' of a dead singer, his obsession growing with every passing day... There might not be a real 'ghost' in this short story, but it's haunting all the same!

Ghosts of Advent Day 10- The Pavilion by Edith Nesbit Plain Jane Amelia has to watch with unease as two of her cousin's suitors enter into a deadly game of machismo. Another Weird story where there might not be any ghosts, but the vampiric plants dwelling in the Pavilion are deliciously creepy!

Ghosts of Advent Day 9-The Cold Embrace by Mary Elizabeth Braddon An artist gifts his already engaged cousin a ring before travelling... but whilst he forgets his love for her, she cannot. A haunting story of love that lingers after death, we are back to a classic and creepy ghost story for day 9!

Ghosts of Advent Day 8- The Room in the Tower by E. F. Benson A young man has a recurring nightmare about staying with the family of a friend and the terrifying Mrs. Stone, that seems to be coming true... Again, not quite a ghost story, but something almost vampiric for our eighth story!

Ghosts of Advent Day 7- The Blue Room by Lettice Galbraith Another potentially 'ghost' less story, this short supernatural tale sees a housemaid witness strange events that take place inside an apparently haunted room, before an act of bravado threatens to turn to tragedy...

Ghosts of Advent Day 6- The Waiting Room by Robert Aickman A much more 'modern' choice, and only really tangentially a ghost story, but a delightfully Weird and strange pick that sees a man encounter shades of the past when he is stranded at a quiet, countryside train station.

Ghosts of Advent Day 5- The Curse of the Stillborn by Margery Lawrence A creepy and sometimes unsettling story, with a dose of Egyptomania and a commentary on colonialism, this one sees a Christian couple bring about the curse of the still-born when they ignore the wishes of bereaved parents!

Ghosts of Advent Day 4- The Real and the Counterfeit by Louisa Baldwin A young man spends Christmas at his friends' family estate, and decides to stage a prank when he learns about the mysterious 'family' ghost that goes terribly wrong... Another creepy classic for day 4 of our advent countdown!

Ghosts of Advent Day 3- Was It An Illusion? by Amelia B. Edwards. A school inspector gets lost in the fog on his way to an inspection, and comes across two mysterious strangers. A classic ghost story for our third day, with a mystery that will have you asking yourself if it really was an illusion?

Ghosts of Advent Day 2- The Diary of Mr Poynter by M. R. James A collector finds JUST the pattern to finish off his house inside an antique journal, but what else has been hidden inside there? A deliciously creepy M. R. James classic for our second day. The climax will stay with you!

Ghosts of Advent Day 1- Miss Mary Pask by Edith Wharton. A personal favourite to kick off this spooky countdown, this is a story of spinsters, dark houses, and a terrifying night spent in the company of an apparent ghost who is very aware of their spectral existence...

3 years ago, in my first year of my PhD, I shared a festive countdown of ghost stories. It feels only fitting that in my final year, I do it all again. Christmas is the season for ghost stories, new and old and returning favourites. So join me starting from tomorrow for my Ghosts of Advent 2024.
