Theology prof seeking to live more fully into the glorious truths I am called to teach. If I'm not in the here and now you'll find me in the 17th C. Projects on George Herbert (profile pic) and Rev. Henry Fairfax (Sir Tom's uncle, hence the other pic)

#earlymodern #17thC New Substack! The last in my series on George Herbert & the ecclesial situation of his time. It's on his friends, family, & patronage networks - from an Arminian icon (Andrewes) to a Puritan iconoclast (Sir Robert Harley). lovebademewelcome.substack.com/p/herberts-f...

Herbert's friends, family, and patronage networks

Welcome to the last in what has turned out to be a rather long series of posts situating Herbert in relation to the ecclesial spectrum of his time.

#earlymodern #17thC Outstanding new book alert!! It's John L. Thompson and Albert Gootjes' superb translation / bilingual critical edition of two key poems by the remarkable and utterly brilliant Anna Maria van Schurman, with a terrific introduction to her life / work / context.

My devotional on George Herbert's poetry is out! It is my small return of love & gratitude for all that he has meant to me for over 30 years. I hope it honours him, and I hope it blesses others even a fraction as much as he has blessed me. #earlymodern #17thC wipfandstock.com/979838526252...

Love Bade Me Welcome- Wipf and Stock Publishers

Everyone needs wise companions in their walk with God. Through his poetry, George Herbert has been drawing others into a more honest faith and a deeper love ...

#EarlyModern #17thC I'd be glad of some help with how assessments for these 3 levies were calculated. I'm researching a clergyman who paid £5 for the 1620 clergy Palatinate 'loan', over £6 in 1639 for the Scottish war (these seem rather steep!) and £1 6s 8d p/a (1634-36) for the repair of St Paul’s.

#EarlyModern #17thC Forbidden Desire: main point re Mediterranean vs N. Europe taken, but it seemed like an exhaustive exercise in largely missing the broader point (until the last chapter...sort of). As a non-expert in this area what should I read as a supplement/corrective esp. re 17th C England?

#17thc #EarlyModern Anyone interested in the British Civil Wars - there's a desperate need to track down Dave/David Plant, who helped to set up the BCW Project website. This was a SUPERB resource but the website is down and will soon disappear. If you can help contact details are in the post below.

Current reading: intense theology (Davenant), detailed history (the Temples), George Herbert (sabbatical project), Thomas Goodwin (devotional), and a novel (Rose Tremain's Restoration). Common denominator? The 17th century, of course!! Guess who is absolutely *loving* being on sabbatical?!?! 😀❤️
