"Well, San Francisco's changed. The things that spell San Francisco to me are disappearing fast." - Gavin Elster in the film, Vertigo 1958 I often hear folks lamenting on how much San Francisco has changed. While I empathize, change is constant. Could today's losses lead to a better next act?

I recently came across a Maltese Falcon replica at John's Grill. The sculpture is an ideal San Francisco icon. Not just because the story was set in SF, but because SF's a city built of MacGuffins. We chase mythical prizes, but why? To improve life? To fuel egos? This is the stuff story is made of.
I just finished Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin. Despite the book glossing over the actual labor/people required to make a game and the emotional immaturity of the two protagonists, I still found myself wishing I could have played Sam and Sadie's games back in the day.
