Given Vernon had only minimum detection levels of precipitation throughout the entire month of July, it's not surprising that the Okanagan (and Nicola) are experiencing Level 5 drought, the most severe category. The North Okanagan region will be extremely prone to fires for weeks to come. #VernonBC

The drought rating for southern B.C. as of Aug. 4, 2026. In the very dark area surrounding Kelowna, it's been designated at Level 5, which is the most severe ranking possible.

Vernon July 2026 Weather Summary 🧵 𝐄𝐱𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞. Extreme precipitation (effectively zero). Extreme high temperature. Extreme climate. 📷 Showy Milkweed is the primary milkweed species native to the Okanagan. These plants, critical Monarch habitat, are exhibiting extreme drought stress. #BCWx #VernonBC

The image depicts a landscape featuring Showy Milkweed plants, which are native to the Okanagan region. In the foreground, several milkweed plants are visible, exhibiting signs of severe drought stress, evident through their wilted and yellowing leaves. The plants are surrounded by dry, brown grass, suggesting a lack of moisture. A rocky ground is partially exposed, with sparse vegetation around the milkweed. In the background, dark green sagebrush and low shrubs rise on a slope, leading up to distant mountains under a light, cloudy sky. The overall colour palette is dominated by muted yellows, browns, and greens, characterizing a dry environment under the stress of drought.

Milkweed is essential for the survival of monarch butterflies as their exclusive larval host plant and a vital midsummer nectar source.
