this wasn't my first interaction with Darryl Taft, but it's the earliest one i can easily retrieve. he was one of my favorite reporters to work with, and genuinely one of the nicest human beings i've had the good fortune to meet. RIP
i did not like the Rutschman trade, but at least i understand the thinking. the White trade is just straight up confusing. the roster's had a bunch of mismatched pieces for going on two years now, and they added another outfielder? "There are ways to make this work?" don't get this trade at all.

finally saw the Odyssey. the partisan critiques of the film were, as expected, clownish, but what i didn't expect - and hadn't seen in the reviews - were the explicit ties to the Bronze Age Collapse. didn't remember those from when i read the Illiad so assume they were tacked on, but interesting.

when i was a kid, my parents got a betamax machine rather than VHS. as a result, the only kid movie the rental place had available was Ralph Bakshi’s Lord of the Rings, which i watched maybe a thousand times. now watching it with my 10 year old, which is a trip.
talking to my doc this week, she tells me we dodged a bullet by avoiding having to pay for rabies vaccinations after our bat incident. apparently the shots are $11K pre-insurance, which only knocks it down to $3500. shout out to the Maine wardens for the 24hr hotline and testing the bat so quickly.
