While we await the details of the US trade negotiations, I'm urging the Prime Minister not to grant any concessions that would further undermine our economic independence.

Black text on a beige background: For the benefit of all the workers affected - in every industry from steel and aluminum to autos, forestry and more - a good deal with the US would be great news. But while we await the details, I’m urging the Prime Minister not to grant any concessions that would further undermine our economic independence.

We are dealing with a President who trades in chaos and unpredictability: there is no deal that will bring an end to the threats and uncertainty. For this reason, protecting Canadian workers without granting further unilateral concessions is essential.

And the Keystone XL pipeline is a concession that makes no sense whatsoever - for our economy, our sovereignty, or the climate. Earlier this year, the Energy Minister said repeatedly that he wants to help the US achieve “energy dominance”. This should obviously not be any part of a trade deal between our two countries.

Canadians are not in the mood for more giveaways to the Trump administration. Even if that means walking away from the table to protect Canadian workers and industries.

No deal is better than a bad deal.

When the US struggles to put out wildfires, Canada has always been there to lend a hand. But when Canada struggles with the same, all Trump has for us are threats and insults. Canadians are tired of it.

This is how democratic norms erode. Trump is turning counterterrorism into a tool to target the political left, and Canada is showing up to legitimize it. We should be defending democracy and civil liberties, not giving credibility to authoritarian politics. www.thestar.com/politics/fed...

1/ Trump is fuelling a new McCarthyism that is both delusional and dangerous. It’s clearly intended to crack down on Americans who are resisting his anti-democratic agenda. It’s also a serious escalation of violent authoritarianism from our next door neighbour.

The Trump administration is hosting a high-level global meeting on combating “political terrorism” in Washington — a move experts have described as a politically-motivated crackdown on left-wing movements. Canada is one of more than 60 countries attending. Just in from @markramzy.bsky.social:

Incredibly brazen for the Prime Minister to boast about the “lasting benefits” of expanding fossil fuel production on a day like today. Record-breaking heatwaves. Toxic smoke engulfing cities and towns. Out of control wildfires forcing entire communities to evacuate. /1

The world wants to do more with Canada. Our MOU with Alberta will unlock those opportunities in energy — and create lasting benefits for Canadians.

The PM needs to explain the math of the Gordie Howe Bridge deal. The tolls were supposed to pay the taxpayer back. Now 50% for the first 15 years is being put into a development fund. The New York Times is reporting that 50% will be controlled and accessed by Americans.

"After promising in the MOU that if a PL was to be built, it would have to be financed and operated by the private sector, we've learned that "Canada and Alberta will be equal partners..." Another project funded by taxpayers, even as oil companies are expected to earn $60B in profits this year."

The PM tried to find a"win-win" scenario with Canada's oil giants. This is why he rolled back the modest regulations that would have lowered emissions. But big Oil doesn't do "win-win". They win. End of story. My latest on the politics of a petro state. substack.com/home/post/p-...

The pipeline announcement begins with Carney acknowledging, without a hint of irony, the “biblical weather” in Ottawa yesterday. Extreme weather huh? Like the kind exacerbated by climate change? You don’t say! Hm!!!!

Carney’s flight to Edmonton, where he’d hear Danielle Smith’s pipeline plan pitch, is grounded due to extreme weather —which is exacerbated by the climate crisis that pipeline plan would worsen 🤗 WHEEEEEEEEEE WHAT A WORLD
