Although he didn’t like the label, Garcia was viewed by many as the leader of the Grateful Dead, being a founding member, a principal songwriter, the lead guitarist and a vocalist with the band. Garcia performed with the Grateful Dead for their entire 30-year career (1965–1995).

Jerry was also renowned for his musical and technical ability, particularly his ability to play a variety of instruments and sustain long improvisations with the band, which made the Grateful Dead "the pioneering Godfathers of the jam band world".
Despite having only one top-40 single in their thirty year career, "Touch of Grey", the Grateful Dead remained among the highest grossing American touring acts for multiple decades and gained a committed fanbase (“Deadheads”) by word of mouth and the exchange of live recordings due to the band's permissive stance on taping.
The band was ranked 57th by Rolling Stone magazine in its "The Greatest Artists of All Time" issue.
Garcia also founded and participated in a variety of side projects, including the Saunders–Garcia Band (with longtime friend Merl Saunders), the Jerry Garcia Band, Old & In the Way, the Garcia/Grisman and Garcia/Kahn acoustic duos, Legion of Mary, and New Riders of the Purple Sage (which he co-founded with John Dawson and David Nelson).
He also released several solo albums, and contributed to a number of albums by other artists over the years as a session musician.
Garcia was staying in a California drug rehabilitation facility when he passed away from a heart attack on August 9, 1995, at the age of 53.
He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 as a member of the Grateful Dead.
