Important Announcement... Well, I've hit the max amount of label data again. Only this time, it's not because of translations to other languages. It's because there are so many labels now. At this time, I have closed SonaSky's DMs as I am unable to add any more new species. So what now? (1/n)

It took most of the weekend but sonasky is back. And more resilient than ever. And on new hardware. :') Should be nice and tidy now.

An emotional last 24+ hours trying to quickly get this back online. I know I'm not beholden to any SLA's or anything, but I know many people like SonaSky and I feel bad that yesterday's power outage seemingly frying the main node is causing problems. I will continue to chip away at fixes. Thx.

Well, here we are. 24+ hours later from the initial start of the problem, I'm still pretty exhausted, BUT... the most important data recovery is complete. Enough to keep the labeler running on a new node.

What's been done:

Recovery for signing key and database for the labeler
New gitops-controlled infrastructure on new hardware with a drive that isn't exploding, with automated daily backups, to make this kind of thing easier to recover from in the future should it (hopefully NOT) ever happen again.
SonaSky Ref data (because it lives in your Bluesky repo, not on my server) is still intact! so you're good there! But in the spirit of making this easier to manage (for me), I've also moved SonaSky ref deployments to be part of the same gitops process mentioned above. What does this mean for you? Basically nothing. It just means making sure it's online and available to use is easier for me.

What's still left to do:

I'm not out of the water yet. This isn't really how I'd hoped I'd be spending my Friday/weekend...

I'd like to rewrite the label browsing web app (for finding a species label). The old one wasn't the most efficient and I think I can do better with that. For now, this service remains offline. As a workaround, if you're looking for a label, try searching on bluesky.
I'd like to test some efficiency improvements to the bots handling applying/removing labels. For now, these services remain offline.

I greatly appreciate your patience as I've worked through this issue. This has been an unexpectedly stressful 24+ hours. I ask for your continued patience over the coming days (and week) as I continue to chip away at getting everything running close to the way it had been. Again, for now, the main impact is you will not be able to add/remove SonaSky labels. I apologize for the inconvenience, but I will have something up as soon as I can to remedy this.

Disk Failure after Power Outage

An unexpected power outage on 2026-07-23 brought Sonasky offline. While there was backup power, it was not sufficient in keeping the primary Sonasky node powered until the outage was resolved. There was a failure in automatically shutting down the primary node, and it was unsafely powered off.

After power was restored, services were briefly restored. However, Sonasky went back offline within about an hour. Upon investigation, it appears there is a drive health issue.

Data recovery attempt is in progress.

[ SonaSky Ref Updates - 2026-05-13: v1.3.0 ] - You can now select which of the images in a post with multiple images you want to use as your ref/alt ref! - Characters with the "NSFW" tag will be blurred until you click "continue"

Screenshot of the character editor on ref.sonasky.app. Shows that you can select which of the images on the post entered for a ref image you would like to use, in case it is not the first image.

On a page where the "NSFW" tag was applied to a character. This blurs the page content and asks you to click continue before viewing.

Scrolling on your phone in public is nice... until someone (chronically) doesn't tag their NSFW content! @remember2labelnsfw.bsky.social seeks to solve that! It's a labeler that hides media from accounts that regularly forget to/flat out skip labelling nsfw content as such.

How to report a post to the labeller for automated review: "Report Post" > "Unwanted Sexual Content" > "Remember to Label your NSFW :)". (alternatively, you can report an entire account with reason "other")

Posts by users who are chronically forgetting/skipping labeling nsfw content as nsfw will have posts hidden like this, once they have the label.

Btw! Totally forgot to make a post showing these, but I had a few prototype @sonasky.app badges that I gave to some friends at #anthrocon this year 💙 3d printed the base & glued on the labels VERY hastily while packing pre-con xD Made the logo an NFC tag that goes to each person's bsky as well!

And finally, out of nowhere, power is back! The bot is catching up on the last 24 hours of actions so there are delays until it catches up. If an action you took to get/remove a label doesn't happen in the next couple hours, please try taking the action again and have patience.

Warning: there is a potential for SonaSky downtime as power has just been lost where the server is running. Updates to come in this thread.

I've added this uptime monitoring to get notified faster if something goes wrong. I'm still supporting this as a Best-Effort service, so I don't want to give the idea that by providing uptime monitoring it's perfectly reliable. Thank you for your patience and understanding as always.

Status Update: 2025-05-24T13:00:00Z User reports stated that the same issue was occurring with the Pokemon instance; I logged in from bed and applied the same fix, then went back to sleep for a bit. Should be all good now.
