Bringing this back for The Odyssey. Nolan shot it on IMAX, and one feature of larger physical film is that the in-focus area appears narrower than on smaller frames. When you increase the lens' image circle but keep the focal length fixed, the depth of focus appears shallower.
kurt@spacekop.bsky.social · 9mo agoThe "faster" a lens is, the more shallow the depth of focus/field you get and the blurrier the out of focus regions get. It allows you to film at almost any time of the day, but it also provides a certain effect that's easy to overuse because it can be novel and striking. It's surreal.
